Hello...

What is the diameter of the standard a2 sights?  I've been looking at the ashley sights and they have .1 for the small and .230 for the large one...  is this the same as the a2 sizes?  I'm wanting to go same plane but yet keep the same aperture size as the a2 iron sights... thanks!

Ashley Rear Sights

XS Sights have the same size holes too:

also... does anyone have any info on how to change out your rear sight?  w/ another aperture?

Don't know about the diameter, but as for swapping out the aperture, you need to remove the roll pin from the windage knob with a punch.  You can actually see the pin hole in the picture above, lower left.  Once the knob is off, remove the screw that holds the aperture.  It's a regular flat head, on the left side of the sight.
Be sure to work over a tray or something to catch any springs or bearings that may fall.  Installation is the reverse of above.

thanks for the info on how to change out the apuretues... seems pretty easy... now if I could just get the data on the diameter of the a2 holes!

For the M16A2 type rear sight peeps:
Large Diameter marked "0-2" is 5mm.
Smaller "longrange" aperture is .070".

^The AO ghost rings are noticably larger than the standard A2 apertures.

I like the AO same plane ghost rings MUCH better than the standard A2s for close in, fast action shooting. They give a better "ghost ring" sight picture IMHO.

well I'm more concerned about the smaller aputure... i want one that will be just as accurate as the ones in the service...

A larger aperture doesn't make any given rifle less accurate.

you don't think so?   I've tried zeroing a carbine with the large apeture and it sucks...  compared with the smaller apeture... am i just crazy?!

Both apertures are large.

No the smaller hole doesn't make the rifle more accurate - it just makes it EASIER for you shoot precisely.  But I too like a small hole aperture for precision shooting.

FYI I talked with Giles Stock asking him why the Ashleys/AOs have such a large small aperture.  He indicated it was designed to be used with the Ashely/AO front sight which is noticably wider than the stock front sight.  If the small aperture was the same size as the A2 then it wouln't be 'usable' for anything other than target shooting (and that isn't what the AO sights were intended for).

Zeroing with a larger aperture will be MUCH easier if you learn to shoot with a consistant cheek weld. Put your head in same place EVERY time. You might not need a rear sight if you get it down pat.

It seems that these are somewhat hard to read because the formatting doesn't seem to work since the site switchover.  If you are patient you will be able to read them though.  Nevermind.. just fixed that, atleast on my posts.
