m&a is marked 0-5-10-15-20
dpms is marked 6/3-z 4-5
colt is marked 8/3-4-5-6-7

the colt and dpms have course spriral thread on the elevation
the m&a has a fine thread pitch for the elevation

the m&a carrying handle measures .832 from the bottom of the base to where the rear sight sits when down tight
the dpms measures .800 which is.032 difference in heights.  .0025 = 1/4 minute for a 12min/inches overall variation in elevation if these handles were interchanged.
why would this be,is there no industry standard, why the differently marked knobs and style of thread pitches

Remember, the top half of the ring, the part with the markings, is separate from the bottom portion, which has the threads.

A2 (fixed carry handle upper) sights can be adjusted to 800m, and should have the 8/3 wheel.  They have course threads.

I've seen "A3" (detachable carry handle) rear sights (which have the finer threads and a shorter elevation screw) incorrectly ssembled with the 8/3-marked wheel, when they will only adjust to 600m.  Some places do this on purpose to save money and not have to stock two different marked wheels.  These should all have the 6/3 wheel.

National Match A2 sights use the same fine threads as the carry handles, but can adjust to the full height, requiring twice as many clicks to adjust to the same level of elevation as the standard A2 sight.  These usually come with the 0-5-10-15-20 -marked wheels, and you count clicks.
