John,
I have had some experience with the old m68s that my unit has vs my personal comp m2.  I noticed the old ones with the ARD were hard if not impossible to use.  The dot was washed out and the only way to effectively employ them was to close the front scope cover and shoot like that.
On my personal M4 I have the comp m2 without an ARD.  I havent tried one on there either.  I was wondering, were these comp ms from the unit just old or is the dot that hard to  see with the ARD?  Even after removing the ARD they were still quite hard to get a quick fix on them.  We acquired them from 7th Special Forces Group so they had a lot of use in the past but had been collecting dust as of late due to lots of new cooler stuff being out there.
Batteries were replaced with the same results.  The sites were being used on A2 uppers with a gooseneck mount and were roughly over the barrel nut (same as my personal m4 which is much brighter)
Any idea on a fix for these?  The 9 I messed with all acted the same and had these symptoms plaguing them.
Also if I add an ARD to my personal site how much will it cut down on the dots brightness?  Is it even worth it to get the ARD for my upcoming deployment?

Hoplite - I am quite new to the Aimpoint game, but here's my take on the ARD.

I have a Comp ML2 with the Killflash.  First thing I noticed was the honeycomb.  On my ACOG, the honeycomb was not visible because of the magnification.  However, I do not see the honeycomb being a big distraction.

Other than cutting the reflection of your Aimpoint, the Killflash my also cut any glare that could interfere with acquisition of the dot.  I'm just supposing here.

Also, the Killflash will protect your front lense, obviously.

IMHO, I would try one out.  If its not to your liking, they are quite easy to remove.
