I want to buy a Bushmaster A3 20", but I understand the carry handle is the same as a carbine.  Is that right?  Would it be possible to change the rear sight assembly out to get the 800m sight instead of the 600m one?

Any reason you need 800 yard sights rather than just 600 yards?

I'm from North Carolina and haven't seen a single place to take shots at 1800 feet let alone 2400 there. Trees, hills, houses ...

[/s]All carry handles (at least Colt's) are 600 yds.  The reason for this was just covered but I can't remember where...[/s]

Sorry, Circuits, but ALL carry handles have 6/3 wheels (unless they were accidently/improperly assembled with the wrong upper wheel).  In order for the rear sight to be adjusted to 800m, the elevation screw would stick out the bottom of the detachable carry handle, and there'd have to be a hole in the flattop upper to accomidate it.  With a fixed A2 upper, that's not a problem.

I know a few carry handles have been assembled with the wrong upper wheel (i.e., the 8/3-marked wheel), which has no real bearing on the adjustment, since it's the lower half of the wheel that's attached to the elevation screw.  But if you measured the height difference of the rear sight after one full rotation of the elevation wheel between an A2 upper and a detachable carry handle, you'll see the difference regardless of the wheel markings.
