Hello folks. What would be the most effective intermediate range (200 yards to 500 yards) optic? A.Trijicon ACOG with BAC(4x or 3.5x) B.Leupold Vari-X 3 series C.Fixed 6x scopes (Valdada or Leupold) I think I will stay away from variable power scopes since I had my bushnell scope change its POI after changing magnification. Me thinks 10x is too much for 500 yards. Any recommendations? |

This is for no accurized rifle, all I need to do is reliably hit COM at 500 meters. It is for use with AR10A4 and must be VERY RUGGED since I'm not putting any BUIS on this rifle. My mind is currently set on TA11E 3.5x35 Chevron I hope AR10A4 is also reliable since I'm going to use this rifle as a true SHTF rifle second only to 20" AR15. |

The ACOG is my choice - and the US Military's too. Using 3-10x scope I found that I could hold a 4x scope steady enough to hit the COM freehand often enough to make me happy (everytime) out beyond 100 yards. 18" isn't much area and above 5x the scope is wobbling around so much it gets hard to hold focus. I have a 3x ACOG that is very pleasant to use at ranges out to a few hundred yards. As the target gets smaller - or the range futher I need to drop to rice-paddy prone (kneeling) or sitting and finally prone out. When shooting if I can get a hand rest - a tree, rock or side of a building range almost equals prone. I have a "professional" (yeah right) 5 x 33 mm scope that's nearly as easy to use (and a whole bunch cheaper at $160). Hitting a COM is a bunch easier than hitting a one inch bullseye "X" at the same distance. I routinely practice on a 12" rifle gong where the only thing I care about is a ringing gong - a miss is a miss - a hit is a hit. While target shooting I'm worried about every fraction of an inch. |

Not sure but..judgeing from your criteria sounds like you are looking for your AR-10 to be a battle rifle..but dont want to rely soley on irons.. COM on what? deer coyotes two legged varmints..steel gongs? Given that you arent going to battle with this but it will serve in the capacity of a home defense rifle? (your criteria being COM 200-500 yds) I would go with a low power illuminated scope or sight.. If this is just gonna be a deer or varmint hunting rifle...I'd go with the Leupy 6X or the TR-21 Trijicon thats on sale Other good choices imo are... IOR-M2 Illuminated (4X) for 308 or TA-11 (3.5X)? (either the chevron or donut reticles) Trijicon also makes an illuminated low power variable TR-21R which is on closeout right now... so... if you call Robert at www.sableco.net(309)496-3030 or (2020) or SWFA or Bear Basin you might find a really good deal on one.. http://www.trijicon.com/ If however you just wanna ring the gong at 200-500 the luepy 6X 42 is imo a good choice..my favorite all arround scope..(personal opinion) and works good "for me" even inside of 100yds no problems.. This is one of those kinds of things were a feller has got to find what works best for himself..what works best for you..might not be what works best for someone else.. |
