OK, since the concensus on my last post (Burris Black Diamond vs. Bushnell 4200 Elite) seems to recommend the Bushnell scope, I now need some recommendations on mounting gear. Again, I have a Bushmaster Varminter 223, with a flattop receiver (it has 1/2" risers built-in). Since I'll be purchasing the Bushnell 4200 Elite 6-24X-40mm, I need some advice on what gear to purchase for mounting. Thanks again in advance for any input! |

I'd take off the risers (sell them) and get a 1 piece Armalite mount. Standard rings usually won't allow the scope to be mounted forward enough. (depending on the scope design) (note the scopes are designed differently, hence they both end up in the same place - eye piece over the charging handle) Mine don't: Whereas the Armalite does: |

DON"T EVER BUY RINGS THAT FASTEN WITH A WRENCH, ESPECIALY ON THE ALUMINUM RECEIVER. WHY?. THESE TYPE STEEL CRUSHER RINGS CRUSH THE ALUMINUM DOVETAILS EVERY TIME AND THERE GOES YOUR NICE ACCURATE RECEIVER IF YOU EVER WANT TO HAVE A REPEAT ZERO OF ON AND OFF AGAIN. I HAVE SEEN DENTED RECEIVERS THAT ENDED UP BEING REPLACED AND THAT WAS FROM ONLY HAVING THE CRUSHER RINGS PUT ON IN WITH NORMAN PRESSURE. Good Shootin, Jack |

I agree with the one-piece mount. ArmaLite is excellent. Alternatively, go to EBay and pick-up a B-Square "Colt" mount. These come with the Colt CAR-A3 and are usually being sold at an inexpensive price by guys who've wanted the nicer-looking ArmaLite mount (my brother just got one for $35) LOL!!! My CAR-A3 has been very happy with the Colt B-Square mount... but yes, it's rather homely. I've been meaning to sell it, but heck, it's been functioning nicely. |

GREAT info regarding wrench-mounted kits. I didn't know that, and had been given advice to buy that very type of mount. The person said it would give you a better, tighter grip. They obviously neglected to mention the potential for damaging the upper. Thanks for the tip. Next, with regards to the risers, I was thinking I might like to keep them, in order to give me a better cheekweld. But it sounds as though I would have to take them off to accurately and securely use a one-piece mounting kit. Is that a fair assessment? I've also heard about synthetic inserts which help to give a 100% ring-to-scope fit. Is there something to this, or is it mainly a marketing snow-job to get more money? Keep the great feedback coming! |

Synthetic is pos. ok, but don't realy see a need for it, and I'd trust metal for more stability. Synthetic can deteriate faster than metal. Synthetic may react badly under the extremes of heat and cold, that may cause loss of zero, I don't know, but under pressure the rings get, why take a chance? I like the ARMS#22 throw lever rings, but mostly on the 5.56 and 7.62, and semi auto .50 guns. M2 MG, mini-guns, and MK19, work well too, but .300 mag, and .50 bolt guns can give them a problem. Be sure to consider eye relief as well as height - even with the one-piece mount, you may not be able to mount the scope far enough forward for a comfortable position, especially in prone. I use an extended riser (1/2" high) made by Accuracy Speaks (available direct or from Brownell's) combined with standard-height rings. There's now a similar one available from Compass Lake Engineering. This gives me an extra 4" of rail and lets me mount a Leupold 6.5-20x50 LRT (a rather long scope that needs to be mounted with the objective well forward of the charging handle) and gives me the option for an extra 15' of built-in elevation for long range work. I'm using Wiegand Combat rings (available from Brownell's) - they were inexpensive and work well, even though they don't have the macho look many seem to like. They have a thin adhesive-backed polymer insert that will accomodate any small misalignment and improves the grip on the scope tube. |
