I want to buy a leupold 4.5-14 power scope for my flat top AR.  Would I notice significantly improved performance with the 50 mm objective lens over the 40mm lens?  What rings should I use to mount this scope?

Since noone has jumped on this, I'll help you out.  I own a number of 40mm and 50mm Leupold objective scopes.  The light gathering ability of the 50mm scopes isn't really much over the 40mm scopes, however, the additional field of vision is worth every penny.  If you buy a 30mm tube 50mm obj scope, you'll find an even brighter picture, but my comment to you is; if your target is not identifiable, you shouldn't be shooting at it!

As far as rings go, I'd go with the ARMS #22H.  I'm using them on my Leupold 3.5-10x40 M3 illuminated and I love em.  The other option is to go with a riser mount and to then use any weaver style ring.  Armalite also makes one piece scope/ring mounts, which run about $80 or so.  However, for the money, i like the swing lever, quick release #22h.

Thanks for the reply.  The rifle will be used for varminting and long range target shooting, so the wider field of view will probably be nice.

No problem!  If you're interested in really bright optics, the best scopes I've owned were Zeiss.  Even the cheaper models have incredibly bright optics.  All of mine were the German made scopes, so I can't tell you about the new US made series, but I'd assume they are just as good.

If you're varminting, I myseld would get the new Leupold 6.5-20x50 30mm M1 turret model.  I've seen is for $808, which is an excellent deal, but somewhat pricey still.  Good luck!
