I am building a short Carbine & I am interested in putting some optics on the rifle that would be good for 0 yards to 200 yds. I have a Colt 4X scope for my pre-Ban, but I am not familiar with the new sights. I am familiar with the Aimpoint and the OEG sites. What does the EO & ACOG and similar weapon sites do different than the Aimpoint or a standard scope? Why would I want one of these new type weapons sites? |

In general, the newer optics allow you to get on target much faster but sacrifice some of the precision of traditional target/hunting scopes. EOTech works similar to the Aimpoint. It is also parallax free. The EOTech reticle is a circle with a dot in the center. It has a smaller profile so it blocks less of your field of view. ACOG's are low magnification hardened scopes designed for close quarters use while retaining some medium range capability. The Trijicon models with BAC are meant to be used with both eyes open. The Trijicon web site has a good explanantion of BAC. If you are building a carbine then you are probably more concerned with rapid target acquisition than long range precision. If you will be doing a lot of shooting at 200 yards you're probably best off with a magnified ACOG or Aimpoint. |
| My Eotech has survived through quite a few rounds at this point. Mind you, I am not kicking down doors or jumping out of helicopters. I really like my Eotech. I have an Aimpoint (Comp XD) and two ACOGs and all of them are really good sights. Just depends on what you want to do. For a carbine, a compact ACOG, Eotech, or Aimpoint is probably what you will want. |

an operator dropped his EOTech equipped MP5 from a chopper 50m from the ground, the sight lived and continue to function. how's that for rugged. EOTech is the best and the fastest CQB sight on the market, as for general purpose, the Aimpojnt beats it in the way of longer battery life and a easier control. ACOG with BAC is an excellent combo sight, it will function as a CQB sight and a 300+ yard optic. for your intended purpose of 0-200 yrads, I would highly suggest either the Aimpoint or the EOTech. I personally like the EOTech better. |
