I am looking to get an ACOG for my Colt M4gery.  I need magnification since my eyes just have a hard time with irons.  I would like home defense and plinking up to 200 yards.  Which ACOG and what mounts are recommended?  I've read a lot here, but want a down and dirty - what would work the best for the least money and who carries them?

www.sableco.net has the best prices you're going to find, and service just as good. There are so many different flavors of ACOG, I couldn't even begin to give just one choice, but if yours is an A2 model uppper, one of the compact models might suit you (and your wallet) best. You can get a pretty good idea of which particular model might work best for you by looking through the specs and descriptions at www.trijicon-inc.com

I have a TA-11 and love it. If I were to do it again I would get the TA-31. I believe this is the best over all ACOG that Trijicon makes. I like the compact ACOG 2x20mm TA-47-2 Amber Triangle. The TA-47 has a longer eye relief than the other compact ACOG's. Of all the compact ACOG's I have played with this one was the fastest and easiest for me.

If you want to use the ACOG for CQB type shooting I would avoid the cross hair retical. The donut, triangle, chevron and dot are much faster and work just as well for long range shooting.

As long as you get an ACOG that has the BAC you will not be disapointed. It is the best of both worlds (CQB red dot and magnified scope).

Mounts - I used to have mine on a flat top with a SWAN sleave and ARMS #19. It was a nice set up but was heavy. I got a new complete Colt M4 A2 type upper and sold the old flat top and the sleave. I mount my ACOG in the carry handle and like it there. I like keeping my head up in CQB (not exposed just up so I can see) type shooting. I have not had any issues mounting it there. If you are going flat top I would recomend the ARMS #19. It worked great and returned to zero every time. The best part is that you can remove the scope quickly if it gets damaged or if it gets mud, snow or other debris on it so you can go to a set of back up iron fast. Or you can swap it out for a night vison scope. These were the original reasons I set mine up with a flat top. I decided that I pack this thing around too much during the day to deal with the added weight. I unit also got a set of AN/PVS-7B's and just ordered a ITT 6010. So night vison for me is in the form of goggles not a scope.

Here is a link to some pics of the set ups I was just talking about. I also have a pic of a compact ACOG in there as well as a NSN model on a flat top.http://community.webshots.com/album/29014982TGUaJfUwdL

I agree 100% with Luckystiff.

TA31 4x ACOG donut seems to be the best jack of all trades general purpose optic out to 300 yards.

For Compact ACOG, I would advise you to look at TA47R-2 or TA50R-2 (Amber ones should be fine too, but try one before buying). If you don't mind 1.4" eye relief, definetely go with 3x. But for a combat gun, it looks 2x is a lot better on a carrying handle, especially for M4 type carbine. (I would get 3x for 20" ones)

WE'RE TRIJICON DEALERS, AND TRIJICON USERS. PAUL AND I BETWEEN US HAVE HAD EVERY VERSION, FROM THE 1.5X TO THE 5.5X. IN OUR COLLECTIVE OPINION, THESE ARE THE BEST MODELS IN THE TRIJICON LINE-UP:

TA01NSN 4X32
TA31 4X32
TA11 3.5X35
TA44 1.5X16

IF YOU'RE REALLY SERIOUS ABOUT THE "HOME DEFENSE" END OF THE SPECTRUM YOU MENTIONED, THERE IS ONLY ONE CHOICE: THE TA44. BINDON AIMING CONCEPT NOT WITHSTANDING, UP CLOSE AND PERSONAL, YOU WANT SPEED. NO TRIJICON ACOG IS AS FAST AS THE TA44. AT 1.5X, IT WILL PROVIDE A SUFFICIENT AMOUNT OF MAGNIFICATION TO ASSIST YOU WITH THOSE AGING PEEPERS (ASK ME HOW I KNOW!) AND GIVE YOU THE FIELD OF VIEW AND DEPTH PERCEPTION REQUIRED FOR SERIOUS WORK WHERE PRECISION BEYOND A CERTAIN POINT MEANS RELATIVELY LITTLE.

AS I SAID, WE SELL TRIJICON, AND ARE AUTHORIZED TRIJICON DEALERS. ACCORDING TO TRIJICON, SABLECO IS NOT AN AUTHORIZED TRIJICON DEALER. THAT'S HOW HE CAN SELL AT PRICES BELOW THE LEVEL PRESCRIBED IN THE TRIJICON DEALER AGREEMENT. YOU CAN'T BEAT SABLECO'S PRICING ON TRIJICON.

Thanks guys - good suggestions.  I still have questions before purchasing:
1.) Handle Mount vs. Flat Top? And if flat top, why not right on the top, why use sleeves or other mounts?
2.) Compact vs. Full size ACOG?
3.) I notice most have short eye-relief.  Isn't that difficult in CQB?

Thanks

1.) Handle Mount vs. Flat Top?
View Quote

Handle Mount Pros:
Irons readily available
Can use ACOG with mask or simunitions gear
Cheaper to mount and many ACOG BDCs are designed for this height

Cons:
Some people don't care for the cheek weld - doesn't bother me personally
Can't mount night vision on weapon with ACOG
POI is about 3-3.5" lower than POA under 10m.
Rifle no longer fits in many gun racks, cabinets, cases, etc.
More flexibility in positioning the ACOG on flattop vs. a single mounting hole in carry handle.

2.) Compact vs. Full size ACOG?

Take a look at the Trijicon site for the various reticles, field of view, exit pupil, etc. The compacts are generally smaller and lighter but give up a little bit in one or more of the above areas.

3.) I notice most have short eye-relief. Isn't that difficult in CQB?

Trijicon is pretty conservative in their eye-relief estimates. I favor a fairly aggressive nose-to-the-charging-handle stance and with the TA11 (2.5" eye relief per Trijicon) mounted forward in the carry handle (eyepiece of scope is flush with rear sight instead of protruding past it), I find that putting my nose to the charging handle is TOO close - I start to see a little black around the edges.

Here is a link to an old topic that pretty much covers everything you might want to know about ACOG's.

I love my TA31.

Thanks for the link - a lot of good info. Seems like the TA-31 and TA-11 are favorites.  I haven't read much about the TA01NSN - any feedback?  Seems like a good package only a bit specialized for SF use - would it make that much difference with other weight bullets?

The TA01[NSN] doesn't have the BAC feature.  Most people will be better served by the TA31/TA11 that does, so they're the ones you hear about.
