Well, I had my eyes set on getting a trijicon TA31F (chevron). I think it's about time to make the purchase, but I am now considering the TA50-4 (crosshair) instead.

One of the things that concerns me is that I have noticed that lights (like the power light on my computer monitor or credits to a movie on a black background) when I'm in a dark area tend to give a ghosted light above it. I don't know if I've always had this, but ever since I noticed this a while back, it keeps bugging me. It seems to go away when I tilt my head down and look up, be somewhat visible when i'm looking forward, and more visible when I tilt my head up and look down.

With the illuminated chevron, I am concerned that I may get the ghosting problem. And unfortunately, there is no local shop that has ACOG's that I can check out. The compact has illuminated crosshairs, I believe... but they look like they're much smaller (and would probably cause less of a problem).

Another thing is the price difference ($580 as opposed to $835).

So... can anyone fill me in on their experiences as to why I should or shouldn't get one over the other? (even if it doesn't have anything to do with the eyesight thing)

Thanks

You sir have an astigmatism.  Congratulations now go get some contacts

But on the positive side the BAC ACOGS "ghost" the least of any lit reticles I have ever tried and my astigmatism is about as bad as yours.  If you want a REAL suprise go check out aa Aimpoint Comp M and look at the dot.  it will be a long blurry diagonal bar.  Contacts correct this 100%.  If you dont want contacts the BAC ACOGS blur the least.

I also have astigmatism, and the TA47 red cross hair worked fine.  Seems like the problem is less with red color versus amber

I have looked at a few red dot scopes at gunshows (which is what first made me think the ACOG's might be a problem). To me the dot is visible, but there is an elongated red "ghost" of it above it, making it look like a ":" with the top part being not so distinguished.

Well, thanks for clearing me up on that... I'll go in for an eye checkup (have a friend who works for an eye doctor) and see what I can do about this.

Now, any other input on benefits/drawbacks of either the TA31 or TA50 family of scopes? or any opinions on chevrons over crosshairs?

Thanks again.
