I am trying to figure out what scope to get for my new AR-15. I was thinking about ATN 4-12x60LU or Nikon Monarch UCC6.5-20x44. I want a scope that has an illuminated reticle, rangefinding, variable power, either mil dot or duplex, and bullet drop compensator would be nice. Any suggestions or opinions?

Thanks

I suggest you stick to a fairly simple reliable optic, all the "bell and whistles" drive up the price unless you get a cheap scope.  A 3.5-10x40 Leupold tactical with 1" tube and mil-dots can be had for about $400 and will out last you. I have on on an expensive custom tactical 308 bolt-action rifle and it is perfect.

If you go with the 30mm tube long range 3.5-10x40 or 4.5-14x50, side focus, illuminated mil-dot you are looking at $800 plus.  These are  very nice, but will they allow you to shoot better?  Probably imperceptably, but at twice the cost.  There are advantages though.

The Bushnell Elite 4200 in 4-16 might be a good option, but I have no personal experience with it.

I cannot see the need for a 24x on a 223 personally.  I do have one on a 220 Swift Varmint rifle, and at 600 yards on 10" tall prarrie dogs it is about right. Small target, extreme range is the key.  The Tactical shooters shoot targets to 600 and 1,000 yards with 10x scopes all the time.

Food for thought,
