I bought some Beretta steel mags ( on the way ) and am curious if anyone has used them ? At $11.20 per mag, I thought I'd try some.
How is the QC.. who makes them for Beretta ... etc Before anyone asks "why" ... I had some magnetic panels made up for my action range belt ( 9MM PCC ) and the magnets are strong enough to hold fully loaded, even while running 32rd 9MM Metalform mags... so a quality 5.56 steel mag is right up my alley. They say they are "Military STANAG 4179 compliant."... which apparently means very little. http://www.berettausa.com/en-us/beretta-universal-ar-15-30-round-magazine/c80018p/ |

I have some of British STANAG NATO M-16 / SA-80 mags...
Judas Priest aside, they are "British Steel" and you could beat a dozen to death with nothing but your bare hand and one of those mags - they are Warsaw Pack AK mag tough... I like them. |
|
My guess is they are made by MDS.
I doubt they will have any QC issues. |

Probably the first time someone's done a steel AR mag and it's come out dead nuts reliable (sorry HK, you failed). I mainly use Lancers in my ARX-100, but have given the two steel AR-15 magazines that came with it a good bit of usage in my AR platform weaponry and they will feed and feed and feed and are very well made.
MDS makes good stuff. |

Actually, HK had a decent steel STANAG magazine back in the day (1981) for the G41. It was HK's first attempt to compete with the M-16 Forward Assist Bolt lock STANAG magazine And a HEAVY PIG!!! (9.7 pounds) https://i.imgur.com/sqQwo69.jpg View Quote View All Quotes View All Quotes Quoted:

Yeah, at one point we had a G41k Pre-86 Dealer Sample, I was NOT impressed.

I have a couple of the beretta mags and use them all the time---no issues.

Well... I was able to go pick them up today.
I am impressed..... IMHO the quality is better then USGI, OKAY and most all other metal mags ( at the moment I can't think of any metal mag I own that has been better "out of the box" ) Solid, excellent QC and fit and finish, no sharp edges on the spot welded splines and a VERY even linear seam, an anti-tilt Steel follower, a unique floor plate, every possible sharp stamping edge has been de-burred ... I will post photos later... the lawn needs my time right now... arrgh.... All in all.... If you are on the fence about the QC ... don't be, I might just buy more ! I won't be able to test fire them until the weekend... but hand feeding is very positive, no drag on the feed lips at all while hand charging / hand cycling. |
|
I'm not judging them as I have no experience with them BUT keep in mind what new HK Maritime Magazines are like fresh out of the box.
THEN the springs get weak and the crappy heat treating on the feed lips allows them to spread. |

I will say the packing oil / preservative is kind of a pita though... I am not sure what the coating is on the mag... it almost appears to be parkerized ?!... but smoother.... a form of blueing ? |

how does the base plate come off?
anyway, don't forget FN makes a very reliable STANAG magazine, however they lack a hold open. I have a bunch of the old english steel mags or I would be all over this. Steel mags are very underrated, esp for you young guys that might want a magazine to last several decades in case of a ban. |

The followers have been for sale for a few years now.

View Quote Show a little curved tab that seats against the back spline. it is kind of a PITA to "release" it ... a typical pocket knife blade wouldn't work only a pointy ( M855 ) bullet worked reasonably. |

I have a couple that came with my ARX-100. They are good reliable mags but HEAVY compared to the pmags and lancers that I normally use. They have a quality solid indestructible feel to them but they also feel like if you dropped one on your foot you would notice it. I tried a Magpul follower in one and it would not fit.

i have four of the beretta arx mags, they work great, might get some more. got them off beretta website. plus got the charging handle knob, big help on charging the arx.

I bought 9 for a total of 10 w/ the included magazine of my ARX100 during the president's day sale.
I'm extremely happy with them, wish I had got more at that price but I decided to buy 20 CETME L magazines instead of another 10 Beretta mags. CETME mags will clean up and work fine with new followers & springs, but seems like no other steel AR mag can compare to the Beretta steel magazines out of the box not even the HK units. |
