I use only USGI aluminum mags in my .300blk and only black PMAGs for 5.56, but I'm afraid my wife is going to forget and grab the aluminum mags for her 5.56 rifle - because she used the aluminum mags for years before PMAGs even existed.

I was thinking about using white hockey stick tape to wrap around the mag and write "300blk" on both sides of each mag. I know some places sell fancy rubber bands, but they don't look like they'd hold up to use with mag pouches.

Anybody done this? Any other ideas?

Thanks.

Been some good threads on it, and the recommendations start with what you are doing..physically different mags that have visual and tactile differences.   Adding the markings helps too.   I also make sure to keep them in separate storage containers that are clearly labeled.

If it is on a ready weapon then having the mag already inserted and the spare mag with it can help prevent grabbing the wrong one during stress.  If it is range time then do all you can to avoid shooting both calibers at the same time.   When I have both out, the 300BLK rifles and ammunition do not come out of the cases when the 5.56/.223 rifles are out.

Buy some Testor's model paint and use a dot system.  1 for 5.56, 2 for 300 BLK, 3 for 6.5 Grendel, etc.  That way you know what they're for and others do not.

Bonus is you now have an excuse to put together a model.

For my part, I just don't shoot 300BO.

I keep my 5.45 mags separate by their distinctive shape and color compared to all my 5.56 magazines.

I have hexmags for the 300, totally different look and feel
and just as a precaution, I put blue painters tape on the loaded and stored mags, peels right off and leaves no residue.

I also got a bunch of those rubber band like things at the NRA convention, some gun company was handing them out for free.

Still too close to call on a casual glance to me.  I think the mag is more designed to feed 300BLK better, and the differences are subtle and secondary.

My 5.56 has od green furniture and mags. My 300 is black. Plus my 300 is a pistol so I only use 20 rd mags to keep it compact.

My 300 is cerakoted FDE. Mags are all FDE/Coyote I guess now PMAGS.

FDE goes in 300. Black go in 556. 6.5 G isn't a huge concern as those are the only metal mags I have, but that might wind up being gray at some point.

Why not just write "556" with marker in the dot matrix writing area on the Pmags? That's what it's there for

This is another option, you could even go a step further and stencil the mags used for 300 with 300BLK in a high contrast color.

Best suggestion so far.

I was gonna say make a stencil and paint "300" on the side of the mag but the sharpie is a lot quicker/easier and easy to touch up when needed.

So far, I've only used 20 round mags. for .300 BO.  Don't shoot it much, don't need a lot of mags.

I guess, really, I should have asked this question:

How do I mark my aluminum mags clearly, so the wife doesn't accidentally grab one of those instead of her PMAGs?

White hockey stick tape, then write on it with a sharpie?

Bro, paint all of your wife's shit pink.
Problem solved, problem staying solved.
Edit- mark her stuff, not yours. She won't think twice about grabbing a painted mag if she doesn't know why it's painted. But if everything hers is pink or blue or muddy girl camo...

I bought some of these.

Helps me not only easily recognize my 300 BLK magazines, but to know which are loaded with supers and which are loaded with subs.

I took a paint pen and wrote 300blk on my upper receiver near the bolt catch.  Then I do the same on the left side of my magazines.

Easy enough.

Now I just bought some 300blk Pmags and am just going to use those.  Still leaving the mark on my upper though.

Translucent FDE Lancer mags for .300 BLK, aluminum/Magpul for all 5.56 ARs.  I also mark all .300BLK Lancers with a colored paint pen.  It is easy to tell the difference visually and by feel.

5.56 is black 30 round PMag.
.277 Wolverine 20 round GI.

I use multiple colors of electric tape to designate what is in the mags. From .300bo to 5.56ap. Mags marked in blue are range safe ammo,  red is .300bo etc..

I don't.  I only have so many magazines.  They are fiendishly expensive here when you can find them - PMAGS are $150, even GI mags are over $100.  So  I have to use the same magazines for both calibres.  Of course I never keep magazines loaded (it may not technically be illegal to do so here - but it sure would be frowned upon).   Also my 5.56 mm and 300 Blackout ARs are visibly quite different. I just have to rely upon keeping my wits about me. I examine all the ammunition I am taking to the range, and the bag I am carrying it in, to make sure only the ammunition suitable for use with the AR I am taking, makes it to the range.

I just use a yellow paint marker and write 300 on them, and keep them in a different crate then the others.

I'm now trying to decide if I want another 300 again as  I have a ton of mags already marked for it
