I've been looking for some magazines for a S&W 4516-1 and can only find Promags for a fair price.
I don't have very much experience with em, I own a couple for my AR and Glock 17 but that's it. Does anyone have more experience with em? Because I would hate to spend $35 for a magazine just to be disappointed with it. Thanks. |

It's hit or miss. I have one for my AR, a flush-fit steel 5 rounder, and a 10 round 1911 mag that runs FMJ in my 1911 & both the Hi Point pistol & carbine. Both of my mags run fine, but they have a terrible reputation. Sometimes they're the only option, like 15 round .40" S&W mags for the Hi Point.

I have about 5 for my AK and haven't had an issue. Maybe if your tier one and drop your mags a lot they may fail faster. I wouldn't pay a lot for them but I was worried when I purchased mine that 30 rounders were getting banned. If was all I could find.

There are pro's and cons to promag vs no mag.
Pro mag, you have a mag. So if you sell the gun you have xx mags. Assuming the person you are selling too has never owned a promag. Con, it may or may not work. It may void your firearms warranty (Hi-point for sure maybe others). No mag Con, you have no magazine. Pro you know this and plan accordingly, so you never hear a click or silence when you expect to hear a bang and never draw, fire your first round, get a click and figure out your mag is on the ground because of the unadvertised self ejecting magazine feature. |

I had one once for my first AR. I dropped it loaded. 26 rounds vomited out of it. I sold it on a yard sale.

Bought a few during ban years and they kind of work , so no dont buy them.

They should change their name to SuckMag
They have been around for awhile and can't get it right. |
|
I would not get them!!! I had some and they did not work (junk).

I found a Promag G17 mag out in the desert. The spring and steel insert was rusted but after a Coke bath and light coat of CLP it surprisingly works well alongside my OEM G17 and G19 and ETS G19 mags. ETA Random FTEs but I use it as a range mag anyway.
Still, I consider them USA made crap and wouldn't pay for any of their other mags. Had a AR 10/20 rounder that caused double feeds and wouldn't drop free from more than one lower. That mag is now used to seal the magwell when I paint an AR. |

Every single person I encountered who used a promag for rifle or handgun had magazine related jamming issues.
Stay far away from them. |
|
Ive seen very few of their magazines actually function properly. They seem to have a few gems. Such as the 25 round magazines I picked up for my Marlin Model 60. But mostly I've just seen them choke.
I worked at a gun store for a few months after I got out of the Marine Corps and was looking for a full time job. Nearly every person who showed up with one of those mags had problems with it. With very few exceptions. The worst mags were the 25 rounders that people would get for their handguns that hung 2 feet out of the bottom of the pistol. Those are worse than useless. |
|
Also goes to show, just because its U.S. made doesnt mean it cant be crap.
|
|
I bought a bunch for $3 a piece knowing they wouldn't work but thinking it would be a project still worth $3 each.
I have 12 mags in the trash. And I knew better the whole time. |

A member on the FN Forum posted that he purchased three ProMags for his FN PS90.
He said none would feed, when he called the supplier to see about returning them they told him "Pitch them, we will go ahead and credit the funds back to your card". Pretty bad when their retailers don't even want to screw with returns on them. |
|
Bought some AR mags from them when I was young, they felt cheap, but I went againt my instincts and bought them anyway. What a POS. Should have just put them back based on feel alone. I was young and dumb at the time.
I would say 99.9% of their stuff sucks. Don't understand why they are still in business. Are there that many dumb people out there? We would win a lot of wars around the world if we give our enemies a crap load of ProMags. |
|
Avoid ProMag.
Avoid all non OEM magazines (the only exception to this rule is USGI AR mags). |
|
|
I don't use them because of their reputation.
My cousin bought one of their 30-rounders for his FiveseveN because they're the only game in town for an extended mag. Seems they live up to their rep. FiveseveN runs like a top off the FN mags. Promags, the FiveseveN has FTFs like freaking crazy. |
|
They are perfect for the range to train for failures. Also good for practicing mag changes when you're doing it properly and letting them hit the ground. I almost forgot, they are good for bolting to a wood base for making a display stand.

FWIW OP back in the day I used some of their magazines for my mini-14 and they weren't too hot. Today I run the following mags in order to my preference: Okay/surefeed USGI, Pmags all flavors and D&H. I hope this helps.

It's a little-known fact that "ProMag" is actually a blend word, meaning "Problem Magazine".

I have a couple of older Ruger P95's that I wouldn't mind having more magazines for. A company offered "Target Sport Ruger Magazines" for a decent price so I ordered ten. Package arrived with ten Promags in it. I knew Promag had a bad reputation but I didn't have firsthand experience. I pulled one out and inspected it. It didn't look bad. It fit in the both handguns. At this point, my son who was standing there said "Dad, friends don't let friends buy Promags." Then I tried to load it. Follower turned partway sideways after putting five or six rounds in the magazine and it bound up. I couldn't load more bullets into it. I couldn't even unload it. I had to hold the magazine upside down and pull the rounds out while the follower stayed where it was. Once the magazine was empty I banged it on my knee and that was enough to unstick it. I disassembled the magazine to see what was the issue and found that the magazine spring was almost completely round. Basically it had very large radius-es and very little change to accommodate the corners. It is what I would expect to see if I forced an oversize round spring into a square hole. Heavy pressure on the sides and no contact in the corners. I should have taken pictures. I sent them back with a rather lengthy rebuke to the supplier. They could have saved us both some hassle if they had identified the magazines as Promag. Now my son says "there will be no Promags in this house."

I ve not had much success with pro mags, but I needed a mag for a s&w m39. I saw they make one and decided to give it a try, honestly it's every bit as good as the factory mag.

Freinds dont let friends buy Promags.
OP, you and I arent friends. Buy all the Promags you can afford. |
|
They are great if you want to practice assorted failure drills. If you expect to shoot reliably you want to look elsewhere.

Quoted:
Look into lancer, great mag. Customer service is good too. View Quote OP, run away from Promag as fast as you can. 35 dollars will be cheaper in the long run than buying shitty PROMAG then having to buy the higher priced mags anyway. |

Promag is an acronym....
Like so.... Please Remember Our Magazines Are Garbage. If you want good quality magazines, I can recommend two different kinds from my own personal experience. Windham Weaponry sells 5/10/20/30 round magazines in black. Their 30 round magazine is 11 dollars and has the magpul follower. I received it with my Windham Weaponry 20" GOV. It's been a good magazine. I have never held or used their other magazines, but I'd imagine them to be of equal quality. The rest are just about double the price as the 30 round, for some reason. Brownells also sells their own house brand magazines in both 20 and 30 in grey. I've bought six of the 20 round magazines for range work and I've never had a single hiccup with them. They're almost always on sale for 11.99, regular price of 13.99. They do come in bundles, too where you can buy 10, 25, or 100 at a time if you so choose. Here's the 20's I buy. You'll find the magazines I buy under "078-000-160WB". For some reason their links don't work. The 30 round magazines I have not bought, but I would think that they're just as good as the 20s. Lots of folks seem to like them. You'll find those under "078-000-113WB", but these have a downside that some won't like. These magazines from brownells that I mentioned do not have the magpul improved follower. They use the green follower, which hilariously claims to be anti-tilt. If that bothers you, you can always purchase the followers seperately and swap them into the brownells magazines, or pay 50 cents more per mag and buy the ones from Windham where that's already done for you. Of course, I can't talk about magazines without mentioning magpul. Tons of people have fallen head over heels for magpul magazines. They're immensely popular and overall appear to work well for those that use them. I have not used them, I do not own any, but seeing all that I have, if I wanted to buy some, I would without much hesitation. Another option you can also go with is buy more magazines that your rifle came with, if that option is available. |

Fu*K Pro mag there products a shit, do not even know how they stay in bz, and did I say fuck PROMAG.

My experiences with ProMags have been hit and miss; with more misses than hits.
For a semi-automatic pistol - particularly one I might be relying on for self-defense - I always bite the bullet and pay the extra to buy a factory magazine. For semi-automatic rifles, I would often buy what was available and not too cheap. But then, at the time I knew a gunsmith (now deceased) who would rework the lips on the cheap magazines to get them to work properly. Of course he charged more to fix the cheap magazines than they cost, but it was still cheaper than buying factory magazines. |
