So trying to find magazines at a resonable price (to me) right now if fairly difficult.  My question is, can I just purchase the components and assemble the magazines myself?

Normally yes. In the current market, no.

This. You can do it, but unless you already know of a source I doubt you're going to find all the necessary components.

Is it fairly easy to assemble them assuming the components are available?  Are Thermould 20 Round Zytel magazines in 5.56 worth $10 in the current market?

Magazines are very easy to assemble. Hook spring to follower, slide into mag body, compress spring into body, and slide the floor plate on.

Thermolds are better than nothing. If I didn't have any mags, I'd probably pay $10 each for them.

They are selling for over $17 on some sites.

I have been able to find springs and followers relatively easy. Bravo Co has Magpul followers right now and 44 mag has some springs the other day do not know if they are still in stock. As long as you have neg springs and followers and do not damage the feed lips beyond repair a mag should last for decades. I have some Colt 30 rounders that my dad has been using since the mid 80's that still work great just changed springs and followers every 4-5 years or when they become weak.
