The ranger plates are used for mainly 2 things. THe 1st is to stabile the gun on the ground if you are in prone position. It allows for a more balanced platform compared to a flat magazine bottom. Also it makes it easier to pull your mags out of a pouch on a vest, plate carrier or belt it gives you something to run your fingers thru so they do nto slip off.
The other piece is an original Magpul which are also used to assist in pulling mags from pouches. |

While you can clip the dust covers on the botton of the mags so you don't loose them, they don't serve as a ranger plate in the least. They can be easily pulled off (not good under stress), and they barely stick out. They don't give you the loop and grip you need to pull the mags out of the pouches without risking them coming off.
I would get the ranger plates. Quoted:
