| so I have 20 mags now. 12 pmags, 1 L5, 2 colt 20 rounders and 5 GI mags with magpul followers. I feel like this is more then enough to last me being a range commando and for shtf. The wife and I both have an AR. Tell me what you guys think? I know there are some crazy mag whores out there but lets be practical. Stock up on cheap G.I.s for possible mag ban? |

Mags. They are like pringles... Once you pop, you just cant stop. 20 30 round mags/AR (600 rounds in mags and 2 7 pocket bandoleers w/30 rds/pocket (1020 rounds total)) is my personal standard. Cheap GI mags with new springs and followers is the way I go. It may seem excessive, but policing your stuff under fire probably aint happening. There is no time out or cold range to pick up your shit. 2500 rounds (additional) per rifle in 'storage', forget about it until SHTF, just cycle through is every so often; just to keep it fresh. @ 3500 rounds/gun total. YMMV

Every now and then good deals come up on the EE. Craigslist is a good place too. I have that many because thats all I can afford right now
I dont plan on getting more any time soon as I need to fill that bunch first. |

I read about the guy at some company that bought a whole truckload of mags in preparation for the passing of the latest assault weapons magazine ban. He missed the part in the amendment that made it a felony for private persons to sell them too. People sell prebans to each other all the time.... |

You are correct that folks sell pre '94 mags, but I "think" Casper is talking about the one that didn't pass this year. That one would have made it illegal. Oh, OP buy more mags. |

stock up on cheap steel ones? or plastic ones too? I have had some bad luck with some steel. Manly Okay mags blow. Aluminum is usually cheaper than steel (a new DSG 10-pack runs $95 or so). I've been picking up PMAGs and Battlemags for $14 a piece. Which you go with really doesn't matter. I tend to keep my USGI mags loaded with duty ammo and all of the polymer mags for my reloads. If you find good prices, pick up a few here and there. |

If they ever manage to get another AWB out of committee, I don't believe it will be with the "no sale" clause intact. If it does, it'll be time for people with truckloads of mags to cash in on their investment before it is signed into law. It takes time for a bill to become a law. They're probably as cheap as they'll ever be right now. Look for good deals and buy. |

Yeah, I'm the old CP fanboy, and still have over 490+ CP Al 30rd mags, but I'm building my PMag & Lancer stash regardless. OP - opsec requires a backup stash, spares in case some fail (and some always will fail), plus you always cache sizable stashes of mags, ammo, and AR's in other safe houses\safe places and never stockpile it all in just one place in caseyou have to bugout.

I think those of us who lived through the Assault Weapons Ban are a little more compulsive about buying magazines than might seem necessary. Exactly. I had 6 or 8 30 round mags during the AWB, and those things were cherished like gold. I now have roughly 80 magazines for three (soon to be four) ARs. I keep about 12 loaded (6 SHTF mags, one in each gun, and 3 in my active shooter rig). Five more are range/training mags. The rest are stored away for a rainy day, and some of those are still NIW. OP, just wait for a "10 for $xx.xx" deal and buy a pack here and there. |

I remember paying $15-20 for beat-to-hell USGI 30-rounders during The Ban, and thinking I got a good deal on them. I had an ample supply of AK mags, including a bunch of $10 Bulgarian 'waffles' that Chief Thunder imported back in the late 90s/early 2000s. I missed out on the $5 FAL mags, but have since stocked up on them whenever they can be found cheap.
I pounced on a bunch of Universal/Simmonds 20-rounders at the gun show this past weekend. As cheap as they were, I don't think they will ever go down in price. All were in very good condition, but with the finish missing on many of them. A good cleaning and they are ready to go. I don't even own an AR yet but I have mags, just in case... |

Traded my 40 Lancers for 30 nice Colts and a 840 round can of M855 a few months ago. Lancers are the best mag Ive handled and will get a few more down the road. The Colts pictured I picked up last weekend from a guy who had gotten them in a container he had won at a Army auction. |

Life is all about choices.
When new movies come out on Tuesdays, do you go buy them? That's 15-20 per. How about new Xbox or PS3 games? 50-60 right there. Go out to dinner every Friday and Saturday with your SO? Or to the Club and do drinks? The money is there. Yes. But it was being spent on other stupid stuff. Red box and Netflix do the "fix" for new movies. Games, well wait a few months and buy used, or play the previous version. I cycle back thru my games from time to time. Remembering how fun they were. Date night can be done cheaper, and still have fun. Drinks out are retarded expensive, and you can look for other places with specials. This is handy for every day life, not just redirecting funds for ammo and mags. At some point we all grow up, and realize the money we spent shit on always goes better suited towards better things. As all have stated, mags break, wear out, bent lips, wont drop free from your gun specifically and so on. My cache is always growing. Right now though, I'm focusing on better securing what I already have. I need a good solid locker for my ammo cans and mag storage. My SHTF stuff is all in the safe and at the ready. Do I really think there will be a doomsday scenario? Eh, maybe. But when it comes to taking 2 nephews to the range with table, target stand, pistol range bag, rifles, chairs. Its nice to have all that stuff prepped in nice containers and organized, meaning loaded and ready to work with. Having them at the table shooting and working that part is more important to me than showing them how slow it is to reload. That's an important lesson too in seeing in the heat of the moment, you DONT WANT TO HAVE TO RELOAD AN EMPTY MAG. Plus I'm lazy. 65 mags loaded and ready to go. 40 AK mags 65 various pistol mags for 5 pistols. I'd rather had these in storage loaded for years and cycle thru them for range, then only have a few and always needing more. |
