| Who makes mil spec magazines (not plastic)? I know about magpul mags but im looking for manufactures of mags that are not platistic, atleast I think mil spec mags are not plastic. Most mags I see for sell are plastic. |

I've tried posting twice, so not sure why i can' t see my posts. if you see 3 from me now, please explain what i might be doing wrong.
At any rate, i bought a 3 pack of 42 rnd mags from sportsman's guide (i'll try this time w/o a link??). made in USA and metal. |

As has already been stated, while the lowest bidder normally gets the contract (that's the whole purpose of taking bids) they have to make the product to specification. In the case of USGI M-16 magazines, they have to be "Mil spec" and STANAG compliant (Dimensional compliance STANAG 4179). P-mags are NOT better than USGI and STANAG compliant magazines, if you are trying to fit them in a STANAG only magazine well (scar, IAR, HK 416) that is why Magpul has the E-mag, which IS STANAG compliant in it's dimensions. Also, magazines are not disposable. They are reloadable, and intended to be reused. The term you are looking for is consumable. Magazines are a consumable item, in the sense that over the course of use they get used up (I guess you could call it semi-disposable). But at least in the last 40 years, they have never been treated as disposable after use (try getting out of the military if you don't turn 7 magazines in ). |
| any time i had to use milspec components for the robotics for the DoD, they were the 'best made' version, and could be 4 times the cost of the normal component, but one catalog might be 1% cheaper. One supercharged V8 might be cheaper than another, but they both still have way more power than the most expensive 4 cylinder. i'd rather have cheapest of the best than best of the cheapest. |

| i got a few of those 42 round mags, and everyone of them had a jam, though the 20 rnd Colt ones had zero problem. i see they do make a milspec 40 rnd for sale on sportsman's guide, which surprised me as i thought milspec mags only went to 30 rnd, which is what military seems to use. i'm guessing i'd be wiser to just get a few 30 rnd Colt mags vs. the 40 rnd milspec, just to be safe? |

And the 40 round mags are NOT mil-spec. By the way, I recently ordered 20 of the 30 round GI mags from Brownell's when they were on sale, and I highly recommend them. The Colt mags in your first link look good, but as you can see, they are asking a premium for them.
Even the 6-pack will cost $20 each plus shipping. By comparison the 20 I ordered from Brownell's came out to $8.65 each shipped to my door. Granted, they were on sale and I used a coupon code, but keep your eyes open and the sale will come back around. The "mil-spec" mags in your second link are clearly not mil-spec, and I'd avoid them. As for the 40 round mags, I have no experience with them, but I'm not aware of any "mil-spec" 40 round mags. I personally stick exclusively to 20 and 30 round mil-spec magazines from actual USGI suppliers. There are many choices available, and one needs to be careful because there are a lot of bad mags out there as well. But luckily there is a wealth of good information and advice on this site.

Some retailers have an extremely..... "interesting" definition of "mil-spec". If the gun itself is "mil-spec" they'll call any magazine that can fit mil-spec. I don't think there's a legal definition for the term so they're not actually lying. |

Sportsmans said they'd exchange and refund me the difference, so i'm happy with that. |

The vast majority of Colt mags were made by companies like OKay Industries, UI, etc. I have some super early first run 30 rounders that I believe were made by Adventureline with the emerald green followers and Colt floorplates, as well as a bunch of late 70's-early 80's Okay industries Mags that are Colt marked as well. |
