Does anybody know why the Tan Follower type GI mags use a newly designed spring that is not compatible with the springs used with black and green followers?

Does the new spring have more tension and/or does it do anything else to increase relliability?

I read one post where it was observed that the new spring makes disassembly/assembly easier.  Is that the only advantage?

Whoever did make them was able to squeeze a few more $ out of Uncle Sam would be my guess.  They're probably the sole supplier at this point.

The spring seems not to bind up as easy in the new tan follower mags. Its a noticeable improvement on the feel of the follower
and spring not catching in the body of the mag, if you take a cleaning rod and depress the tan follower down and release it slow or fast.
I sold all my old green follower mags for $6 to $8 apiece , and bought brand new tan follower mags for $8 to $10 apiece. I thought it was cheap insurance and a great upgrade. YMMV
See these 2 post.

Brownells makes them and they are one of the sponsors of this "technical" forum

It appears the gov't altered the Magpul follower enough to avoid patent infringement, including moving the spring loop(?) forward 1/3", necessitating a new spring.

TPicatinny Arsenal designed the spring and follower.

What features of the M16 magazine follower can be patented?  Which are and by who?  I would guess (guesing seems to be common here on AR15.com) the US government would have or would have at one time a lot of these patents, including where to attach the spring.  They designed where the spring goes on both the black and green follower, why would they need to change it, everyone else copied them!
