There was a topic showing full magazines being stored in ammo boxes, safes, and on shelfs. We do not know how long have these magazines been loaded but will the follower spring in a fully loaded magazine loose its strength over time? Is there any standard that states a fully loaded magazine will be inoperable after so many months ( years) ect. |
| What wears out a spring is the cycling of the spring itself from compressed to decompressed so leaving them loaded will not harm them if its a quality mag with a good spring. When my dad gave me his 1911 he had mags that had been loaded in the early 80s..20 years later they still cycled and are still being used by me..for range mags I use wilson 47ds for carry. |

Pun pretty much sumed it up. There are accounts of individuals that have had loaded Luger mags from World War Two and have recently fired the loaded mags with no problems at all. I wish I could also find a link to the study done on the life span of a mag spring, but if I remember correctly, it was found that after 100 years of being loaded, there would be about a 3% chance of a spring failing. So dont have any fear in loading up a mag and leaving it loaded. All my mags that I intend to use for self defense (M-4, Glock, and LCP) are loaded and have been for a number of years. |
