I'm sitting here looking at my AR10 next to my AR15 and I think to myself, the 20 round mag for the 15 could have 5 more rounds and still be level with the grip insted of being sunk in like your going to be fending off moles in the yard.

I know the 30 rounder has been around forever and is great but it does hang out there a bit.

I have some PMags that I cut down to 25 rounds, I really like them.

Why would they need to be shorter than 30 rounders?

I think you'd save around 2"

I don't get it.

People who live in ban states have magazine restrictions. And some people, just like a smaller profile for whatever reason. The gun I go to work with has a 20 in it. It fits better in the rack, doesn't hit me in the elbow, and works better in and out of the car, or in and around the steering wheel and all the other stuff bolted in the car.

Well yes, and running a 20rd p-mag by all means.

But modding a 30rd to a 25rd i wouldn't.

PMag shortened to 25 in the rifle, 20, 25, and original 30 round PMags for comparison.

I like it, that's what I'm talking about.

Magpul, come on man.

still goes below the grip, when I get a 20 rounder it will be for prone/bench shooting, 30 for everything else... getting in/out of cars would beg for the 20 as well as one poster already stated.

Do elaborate.

Original design PMags (prior to the "Revision M" versions) could relatively easily be cut down in length, and the side support ribs reshaped to retain the baseplate.  The locations of the ribs are effectively correct to cut a 30 round mag down to 25, 20, 15, or 10 rounds capacity.  For a brief time this was even done commercially for the benefit of New Jersey residents who have a 15 round mag capacity ban and there were no other 15 round AR magazines on the market.

I had the idea that Magpul could make a customizable-mag body with the ribs and baseplate already made to work together, just sell it in say a 40 round length and then folks could cut them down to 35, 30, 25, 20, 15 or 10 as might be needed or desired.

IIRC (go to the Retro forum for confirmation/details), the AR-15 orginally had 25 round magazines.

Correct, a 25 round straight mag.

25 rounder the new .40 caliber, for the people who can't decide between a 20round and a 30round mag.

Just get one of those new surefire 60 rounders and call it a day.

Those pics look sweet though :)

In all honesty, if that pic is representative of what an actual 25 rounder would look like, then I don't think there'd be a market for 20 rounders, unless people had a grip that was very short or some radically different weapon system.
