All,
This issue may have been addressed and if so please point me to threads you know of. My buddy has a Remington AR-15 223 for hunting ... and it came understandably with a 5-round factory mag. Quite simply the gun jams ALL of the time using the factory mag ... and bad! BUT it functions without issue when he uses my Bushmaster 5-round mag. Is this a problem with it just being a bad magazine or is it to do with the follower? I'm only now reading threads dealing with "tilt" ... is this the issue in this circumstance? Would you all comment on the best mags regards to 5-round ... and/or replacement followers and what manufacturer of follower. Thank you in advance, Buck |

Really need to see where/how the rounds are jambing. Are the tips of the bullets hitting underneath the receiver extension- missing the chamber?
Try- 1-Tighten the magazine release one turn tighter to more securely hold the magazine. If the magazine is too loose it the body can tilt down and away from the chamber.... 2-Check to see the magazine is assembled correctly. Are the spring & follower inserted correctly, spring not backwards, follower smooth in going up & down. Tell Remington you have trouble and they may just replace the magazine. |

Thank you in advance, Buck Before I start loosening/tightening things on my new rifle I would turn my bad magazine upside down and see who the manufacturer is. If you know a different magazine works I would think it is a mag issue. Inspect your magazine as stated above and let us know. |

As I remember we tried a C-Product 5-rounder and I think a Stoner in his Remington, and they both jammed. I kept the C-Product as it functioned in my Bushmaster So maybe it is his gun? I know it's bad form to run smack on manufactures but my buddy has had NO results dealing with Remington. Multiple phone calls and emails have either not been returned or they simply would not ship him a replacement mag.
Each time the Remington jams, we have had to take a block of wood and hammer the charging bar to get the bolt to release the round. As you might expect we fear damaging the gun. So far the only solution has been to loan him my Bushmaster mag ?! ...... He has ordered one but that's a workaround and not an answer. I'd still like some info on tilt issues if someone can respond, what it is and what it causes? And what about followers??? My followers are the green smooth style whereas the mag he has have a ridged chizel shape to them. Is there a preferred follower we should switch to? |

Send the rifle & magazine along with a detailed description of ammunition used and types of failures. Some of these issues may be the magazine because you said the rifle worked fine with another magazine, but some of these issues may be related to the rifle itself. The rifle jams and you need to mortar the action (hitting the charging handle) to clear the chamber.....could be the ammo or the chamber/bolt area needs work. Your friend paid good money for the rifle and he should not have to monkey around to find the magic magazine that will work. The rifle should be able to function with any AR15 magazine made, otherwise something is up. I'd still like some info on tilt issues if someone can respond, what it is and what it causes? And what about followers??? My followers are the green smooth style whereas the mag he has have a ridged chizel shape to them. Is there a preferred follower we should switch to? ** Tilt issues are where the front of the magazine follower can be tilted downward, it binds inside the magazine and fails to present rounds for feeding. Push the front edge of the follower down with a punch and see if it becomes stuck. Anti-tilt followers have extended areas both front/back to offer more surface and help prevent tilting. The anti-tilt followers also ride in the grooves punched into the sides of the magazine body. Followers are made to specific magazine bodies, 30 rnd followers usually will not work in 20 rnd bodies, etc. There are various ways to block a magazine to a specific capacity. Colt used to insert a bent "U" shaped metal block into a 20 rnd magazine and rivited the baseplate in place, turning it into a 5 round capacity magazine. Other makers may use other means, but when Remington wants $42 on their website for a magazine, there are lots of other less expensive options out there. Even if you have to alter a 10 round magazine, blocking it with a wooden dowel, to a 5 round capacity. HTH |

All I can say is don't the C Products, Stoner, Remington, and Bushy magazines all look VERY similar? Chad |

Thanks to all of you for the comments. I also think the best thing to do is have the gun sent back to Remington.
One final question .... can a gun be "warranty" repaired by any gunsmith ... similar to vehicle warranty work? And the costs be passed onto Remington? |

In most cases no, unless the smith is a authorized repair entity for Remington. Better get approval from Remington first before letting any smith work on it or you run the risk of voiding the warranty. Hootbro |
