So i got issued a few mags for my M4 from my Infantry unit and i noticed one of them is heavier than the others and i looked closely and it was a H&K mag.

Are these any good?

i was thinking about replacing the baseplate for a magpul ranger plate and a magpul follower but the follower seems to be metal and super durable. will it even fit?

im not sure about the magpul fit but that is a nice mag you have there

I am not that big a fan of H&Ks, I had DRMO a whole bunch because they got dented and beyond that they were notorious for causing doubles in M4s.

If remember a while ago the army issued a safety of use message on them, because of too many failures to feed with them.

FYI- this is appx 30 days past . They no longer have a contract for the magazines.

Magazine Cartridge NSN 1005015205992 that for each requisition received for replenishments, there is a 'CA' fatal reject processed by the Item Manager. The message reads:

FIELD PROBLEMS WERE IDENTIFIED WITH THE STEEL MAGAZINE(1005-01-520-5992). NO STEEL MAGAZINES WILL BE AVAILABLE UNTIL CORRECTIVE ACTION IS IMPLEMENTED & TESTED TO ASSURE PROPER OPERATION.
REQUIREMENTS FOR 30 ROUND MAG CAN BE FILLED WITH THE ALUMINUM MAGAZINE NSN 1005-00-921-5004.

Thank for the info.... maybe i'll run it through my M4 a few time before getting it replaced.

I haven't had any problem with my HK mags. The floorplates, springs and followers are not interchangeable with others...so, no Ranger Plates. I would use it and replace it when it starts giving you trouble. I have a mix of PMags, USGI and HK mags. I wouldn't stock up primarily on the HK mags because they don't shave commonality of spare parts. I have heard of reliability issues but haven't experienced any myself. If you go in harms way take equipment that you trust that you have personal experience with, not a new unproven gizmo. YMMV

here's another HK mag questions:  Mine say LEO/.mil only.  And the date on them says 10/94.  Did they have HK mags dating that far back?  I thought these things were more recent - past 5 yrsish

That's just a variation of the LEO/Gov't warning. The actual date, IIRC, is a two letter code:

A B C D E F G H I K
0 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9

A 2007 mag would be AH

I  have been using them for several years, and never had issues with them, even the ones that were dented up from a RPG blast still work to this day. About half of the guys in my unit use them religiously, the other half using either the older ones or personal pmags. I have never seen any chronic problems with the HK mags and I am a instructor so I see more M4s being used than most people in every configuration imaginable.Also I found that the HK mags are much more reliable in the SAW than the standard mag.

I am not disputing Mr Rogers or any formal study. I am speaking only from my experience and observations. To date I have not personally experienced or observed any of this, but be assured that if I do, I will not hesitate to discard my HK mags and go either exclusively to my magpul mags or the older ones.
