I have an Armalite AR and have shot it with Brownells, NHMTG, D&H, CProducts (AL and SS), and MagPuls. I have several of each brand and have not tried all of them in the rifle, but have had no problem seating any loaded mags. Some mags had to be seated more firmly than others, but they all would pop in place.

I was going to plink a little today and loaded up a new AL CProducts mag. I could not seat it with the bolt closed. No amount of pushing, pulling, slamming, and cussing could seat the mag with the bolt closed. I opened the bolt and it seated just fine. i started removing rounds to see if it would help. And with this being an aluminum CProducts mag, I promtly sliced my right thumb open on the rear metal seam. (How many times I have I been cut by CProducts seams? Sure do wish they would make the AL mags like their SS mags) When I got to 13 rounds remaining in the mag, it finally clicked hom with the bolt closed. Took a lot of grunting, but it would repeated seat with 13 rounds in the mag. The force required is significantly more than any of my other mags, and this is with just 2-3 rounds in it.

WHat are the problems here? Is this just a case of the mag catch size, location in the lower reciever, and/or with the square hole position in the mag being at opposite ends of spec? I was wondering if tolerances were stacked against me or if there was a problem. Even if it were a problem with extreme ends of spec, it seems that the mag would seat with 14-29 rounds loaded if I grunted hard enough. Mag seated fine with the bolt back

I am thinking about just filing the square hole in the mag a little to make it easier for the catch to enter when seating. Anything wrong with this?

ETA-it is a grey dryfilm 30 round mag with orange Magpul follower.

If it were me I would just file the hole a bit higher.

That doesn't solve the problem of your finger getting cut by the seam. Is this a common problem with their mags? If so I would send them back.

Don't know how common it is. I have read others on this board saying it happened to them, but most folks do not get cut. Or at lease most don't report it here. I meant to take a file to the seam before I used the mags, but this one had been in storage in an ammo can and I forgot to do it.

The seams on CProducts SS mags that I have are very nice-equal to my D&H's, and  slightly better than NHMTG and Brownells.

Good reason to wear bicycle gloves when you are shooting.

You can still use your fingers, since the glove lacks fingers on the last 2 joints of your finger.

But, you are protected from magazines, and can hold a hot barrel if you are careful.

I have 30 Cproducts mags and have never been cut by one.
