How is the quality and performance of the HK AR-15/m4 magazines?  I dont see much about them anywhere but what I have heard is positive.

Generally people seem to like them however the price/performance ratio little off.

They're also pretty heavy.

There are too many other reliable magazines available for me to justify the price of an HK mag which is no more reliable than other options, just my $0.02

I'll agree that they're over priced. I was impressed with the quality of mine.

TRY and get replacement springs for the HK's! If you want a super reliable steel magazine, you can't beat the Cammenga Easymag:

They are great mags, but definitely not worth the price of admission.  PMAGs or C-Products/NHMTG/DNH w/ Magpul followers are just as reliable and a lot less money.

I picked one up for $30.00 at the last SAR show.

I just wanted to have one.

I bought two for the hell of it.  Pmags and stainless C products mags are just as good for less than 1/3 the price.

over hyped and ridiculously overpriced. Buy P-mags instead.

I guess that you get it by now that they are not worth it when you can get D&H for $9.99 each.  Like all of the new mags out now, the are just new versions of the same thing.  The last innovation of the M16/AR15 mag was the Magpul follower.  Everything since is just a more expensive way of accomplishing the same thing.

As the ARFCOM glee club likes to point out, who actually wears magazines out though?

If you want to know about the quality of the mags from any manufacturer, pull out a pair of dial calipers and start measuring.

I only own 8 HK mags as they are pricey, but the dimensional consistancy, particularly at the feed lips, is absolutely incredible.

I have measured them and posted the results here before, asking others to do the same with theirs and with mags from other manufactures, but nobody was interested,,, so I won't bother again.

But I will say a few minutes measuring multiple mags from multiple manufacturers will be a real eye opener.

At $25.00 each i could only afford to buy 6 of them.

All six drop free from every lower in my collection. Thats something i cannot say about any other brand of magazine.

None of them have ever failed to feed. Thats something i cannot say about any other brand of magazine.

I hear the springs will eventually wear out and that replacement springs are not readily available. None of mine have worn out yet. My experiance has been 100% positive (something i cant say about any other brand) so far.

YMMV.

ETA:
I've tried;
Cproducts marlube
Cproducts stainless
Brownells 20 & 30 rnd
Orlite
Thermold
PMAG 20 & 30
USA
Ramline
Eagle
Colt 20 & 30
NHTMG 20
Adventurline 20 & 30
Labelle 30
D&H 30
Okay 20

They're great at first, until you use them and beat them up a bit.  I've been told to avoid them by several members of Army SF, Pat Rogers has agreed publicly here.  So, mall ninjas, there's your answer.

For anyone that's interested in practical experience:

I took one with me (it was all I could afford ), and before I came home, I had to stop using it, feedlips were bent, spring was weak, and it would barely fit in the magazine well.  Granted, it had seen some hard use, between training and deployment I used it for almost a year before it gave up the ghost, and it fed blanks beautifully, at first.  But my PMags never gave me trouble, in the same duration, and the Lancer L5s that I got later into my excursion are still running like a champ.

I ended up giving the HK to a soldier who wanted a souvenir.  It was of no use to me anymore, it wouldn't fit in a rifle.

Your mileage may vary, but between personal experience, and what I've been told by others with far more experience than I, I see no reason to pay over the price of a PMag for them.

That said, they are cool looking.

Maybe I need to buy another just for ARFCOM photo ops.
