Is there really a need to replace the floorplaces on the mags ?  Has there been alot of failures with the part?

No, but then again people like or need to fix things that don't need fixing cause they certainly don't wear out-like floorplates and followers

Floorplates sometimes get bent or damaged from removal for cleaning or spring replacement.  Or from dropping the mag.  I always keep a few extra floorplates around.

It improves looks sometimes.  For example if you drop a loaded mag that had a GI follower the center piece will dent the floor plate,  Not that it matters, but a new floor plate looks better then a dented one.   Plus if you replace the spring and floor plate at the same time it marks the new springs.

Thay are so cheap it does not even matter.

I was thinking about changing the GI Floorplate to a L Plate or Ranger Plate.  Are they worth it ?

L plates are good some find them a bit bulky. But I like that it makes it so you can drop your mag pretty much any place and the L plate takes the blow most of the time.

Ranger plates are better for a vests or chest rigs.

You may want to check out 44mag. That way you can pick up a couple of the "loaded mags" he has and see what fits you better.

Floorplates can get bent (along their long axis) from seating fully loaded mags into rifles with the bolt closed.
Load 28 rounds into "30" rounders and 18 in "20" rounders.

Not to hijack the thread, but how difficult should it be to get the floorplate out of the mag? They arent like my .45 and .40 mags that have the little pin in the hole that you push up and slide the plate off.

Sometimes the four tabs on the mag body get bent too far, from dropping or bumping, making it difficult to  remove the floorplate.  Then the user force things, and bends the floor plate.  It is difficult to get the floorplate back perfectly flat again.
