I am a newby to the AR fun. I just bought a new Bushmaster M4 A3 config. Now the question which I know you have probaly answered many times so forgive me. Can I buy 30 rnd mags? Iam confused on the pre-ban term. Is it right that if a mag was made prior to 1994 I can buy it. Who sells such things I live on Long Iland in NY. Sorry again about Question

You can buy mags made before 9/1994. You can find sellers in the "Equipment Exchange" under AR Magazines for sale section. The new magazines go for 14-$20 new in wrap and the used, who knows?...
Most preban mags did not have any date marks on them, except the ones made by Center Industries.
Only get the USGI aluminum mags made by contract makers such as ADVENTURE LINE, OKAY INDUSTRIES, COLT INDUSTRIES, PARSENS, LABELLE, CENTER to name a few. These function the best. These are stamped on the removable floor plates.. The coating sometimes is extremely worn, but the magazine is still perfectly functional. The gray moly coating is somewhat fragile and is used as a surface lubricant. On the new magazines this coating will appear rough and scratched, but that too is perfectly normal.

There are a bunch of guys who sell only to you folks in the Commie run states.  Go to the Equipment Exchange and you'll find still in wrapper pre-ban mags.  Get 10 or so and you'll be good to go.  Remember you can re-spring them.

+1         most of the preban mags I have seen run $15 - $25 each. The EE is a great place to look and some online vendors may have prebans available. Since you are on Long Island try T&T gunnery in seaford, they may have some prebans in stock.  FYI any mags marked restricted or LE only were made after the ban and can get you in trouble. If you are interested Cproducts makes NY legal 10rd mags that are good quality for about $15.
