When the ban was in effect I was very smug about getting old USGI 30s 70% finish +/- for $15. Then fall 04 ended victoriously (for now) and I began to feel damn foolish when NIW could be had for $1-$2 cheaper in some cases. After hearing lots of the testimonials out there I am feeling pretty good again. I have some 40 USGI 30s half with the black followers, and I have never once had a FTF or other issue with them. I have every confidence that if the train crashed tomorrow and we have what we have for good, they would last me a lifetime. Based on what I have heard thus far I would have to rate the new batches somewhere between good NIW contract and the old USAs

Anybody else have more confidence in their old?

PS, no matter what, I am smug as hell about my 60% or better Simmonds and Adventure line 20s with alum followers for $9 a pop.

I have found that mags do not wear out so to speak.  they are either good to go or defective when new.  defective mags dont get used enough to show much wear.  a mag that has seen enough use that its down to the anodizing has probubly been a very reliable mag.

I've been "unloading" my chest pouch by emptying them at targets, about one per day.  Today I had my first failure of a mag.  Nothing really, it didn't latch completely and failed to feed a round into the chamber a round.  It was a "National Guard excess" Okay according to the guy who sold it to me.  I paid about  $15 bucks for it.  I don't regret having bought it...  I'll test it again and if it fails again, it's going in the garbage.

i am not quite sure what you are saying. are you saying your pre-ban mags that were $15ea are better quality than the current milspec production at $10 ea?

i have not noticed any major problems with the current milspec mags produced by those with gov't contracts

My preban black teflon Labelles never had any of the problems many reported with the current production DH mags.

I think in the rush to meet demand after the sunset of the AWB quality control has suffered. It's not just with Mags though.

If I come across a pile of used magazines cheap, I will consider buying them instead of new ones...

No problems with my NIW post-AWB mags. I took a representative sample of each of the different date-coded D&H mags that I have to Bulletfest and ran through quite a few full mags with each one and did not have one failure to feed/malfunction at all.

I would have to somewhat agree...
I never really thought much about my old USGI mags other than the worn out finish..
These days you have to go through $100 worth of ammo to make sure a $10 mag works

If your shooting your mags much they will wear out. The first thing to happen is the feed lips will crack.

I like the new OKay mags as well as any. I think the finish holds up better on the older mags than the new ones though. I would buy old new in the wrapper over new but not older used over the new ones.

Might this be alleviated in stainless steel mags?

No point in fretting over what you paid for pre-ban stuff.  The thing to do now is stock up on the greatest AR mags ever made for extremely little money now while the going is good.  There may come a time when all magazines are going to the government and all ammo too, and I don't mean because of Congress.

Problem is the quality control of current production is not as good as it was prior to 1993.

Take D&H for example.  Preban Labelle teflon mags have an outstanding reputation.  I have never had one that did not drop free from every rifle and feed reliably. However even though the current D&H uses labelles tooling they dont have Labelles QC as seen by all the posts about bad D&H mags.

The companies are leaving final QC up to the customer right now.

I agree ... I have ten preban LaBelles (purchased for $12/mag NIW during the ban, black followers) and they work very well.  OTOH I had to trash one current production D&H 30rd mag (stamped 12/05 I think) because it wouldn't feed more than 20rds out of the box.

From now on I think I am going to stick with CProducts mags.  I have ten of their curved 20rd mags and they are great.  Shoulda sprung for the Mar-lube tho.
