Here's hoping the experts here can provide a "reasonable" explanation for the following: Loaded the first 20 round curved mag with Magpul follower using a box of Federal 63 FMJ ammo(old stock). The 5th round did NOT leave the magazine, and the bullet was pushed back completely in the case. No factory crimp was noted, and I felt this might have been an ammo issue, and it was the last box I had, so no worries. After the #5 jam, the other rounds fed and fired OK, and locked back empty. Fired a second magazine without incident. Loaded the third mag with IMI 55 ball, well crimped case necks BTW. Again, different magazine, different ammo, and a 5th round that did NOT leave the magazine. Repeated twice. Of 6 magazines tested, two of them would NOT feed the 5th round from the magazine. All other rounds fed well. In the past I've had mags not feed when full. Mags that won't lock back. And mags with binding followers. But these followers move freely. Why is round #5 not being lifted enough to clear the front edge of the magazine? No judgements here, just a simple question WHY round #5 stays IN the magazine, moves forward under pressure from the bolt, and the tip hits the front edge and sticks, with damage to the bullet nose occuring. Something I noticed with all my USMC working mags were two little indents carved out of the front of all my mags like the SS109 was cutting a small path. It looks like the front edge of the mag is very close to catching the front of the rounds. Note: This was with stock USGI 30 rounders. On the HK mag they angled the bottom of the mag at more of an angle which increases the relative pressure on the front of the follower. Maybe that is why they did that. In any case try changing out components to see if any one part is the cause. If it turns out to be the bodies then two small taps with the dremmel one the front edge should ramp the rounds enough to feed. |

Have you tried tapping the rear of the mag on something hard? Why do you think soldiers tap their mags on their helmets prior to inserting them in the magwell? It forces the rounds back against the rear of the mag, eliminating the problems you have. While I'm not 100% sure this is what is happening to you, it's worth a shot, eh? |

I just recieved 2 20rnd curved mags with magpul followers. It may be a while before I can get to the range but when I do I'll let ya know if I see the same problem. I'll be shooting LC XM855PD. Oh and to help me more closely match your results does you rifle have M4 ramps? T |

Today using the same ammo and weapon (no M4 ramps, btw), and four Colt 20's randomly picked from storage, as well as an untested pair of the D&H 3/06 30's, close to 200 rounds were sent down range with ZERO malfunctions of any kind. The bullet tips were not just moving forward, they were being presented TOO LOW to clear the front edge of the magazine box. 5 round shooters will PROBABLY never notice an issue with them anyway. Leave them in the plastic and for CERTAIN you will have no issues. This magazine issue is no longer a concern of mine, as the magazines were returned. Paladin |
