I am slowly running out of room in my gunsafe and it is a large one. I was wondering how many of you bother to store your spare mags in your gunsafe especially if you have a large quantity (I've got a bunch of Labelles etc, not to mention AK mags). I was just thinking about boxing them up, labeling the box and putting it in a closet. Thanks.

I have my extra magazines boxed up and in a closet where I keep other firearms related supplies, works out fine.

I have a safe at one end of my closet, an ammo locker at the other end, and shelves in between. The mags go on the shelves.

I have three large safes so the mags go in the safe.

Wizzo,
A20mm can works great for mag storage as well.
Laying them spine up, you can fit 95 30 rounders in the can.
Definately not for SHTF, but we are talking just storage purposes here.

+1 On the 20mm can

Well, I only have about 40 30rders total (which coincidentally is what this can could hold) but the other 11 30rders not pictured in the can are in another can or loaded with ammo.

I might have to keep an eye out for one of the 120mm cans at the next gunshow, though.

I cannot imagine keeping mags in my gunsafe.

I can't even keep all my guns in my gunsafe.

Thanks for the responses. I removed all my AR and AK mags from my gunsafe (left the pistol mags), boxed them up, labeled the boxes and put them in a closet. Boy did it give me extra room! 20 East German AK 30s, 16 Romanian AK 40s, 43 Bulgarian AK 30rd. Waffle mags, 5 Polish 30 rd. AKs, 54 AR15 5.56s.

I keep a half dozen loaded AR mags, plus some loaded handgun mags (P220 and Glock 19) in the safe. Reason being, someone can steal unsecured mags just like they can unsecured weapons. This way, IF I still have the firearm, I'll have at least a SHTF loading.

That's the plan anyways...

Not a bad idea to store extra mags/ammo in a 2nd safe, but I keep my mags in Zip-locks w/ desiccant, inside 4 "rubber maid" type tubs.

One safe for guns, locking steel cabinets for ammo, and all the empty mags are out in the open.
Link Posted: 1/2/2006 9:07:25 AM EDT
I presently keep a box of 30 unused AR mags in the safe. With the recent addition of another rifle this winter, I think I'll have to remove them to make space.

Shelf, all are always loaded.

Guns go in the safe, mags don't unless in said gun.

Spare mags go on the shelf here as well....

Mine are on the shelf in the safe. Can't imagine spending $1500 on mags and not having them secured.

Edit cause I can't spell

Do you "secure" your bedroom furniture? It is most likely more than $1500. How about your TV? Stereo?

I would have to buy a $800 safe just for mags. Whatever.

Mine are in bags in the closet

Mine are in the garage and the spare mag bodies are on the floor in the garage's bathroom. I do keep my Beta-C mags in the safe.

I'm working on a locking area in the garage so I can store ammo and mags.

mine are on the floor, on the safe, on the tv, on the desk, in range bags and in ammo cans. I just cant seem to keep them together

I keep the rifle in the gun safe. I keep one loaded 30-rounder in the rifle (condition 3), plus a 20-rounder attached to the rifle* in a pouch... in case of SHTF this will give me time to get to the rest of the mags... don't have a lot of mags yet (just bought rifle a month or so ago he
*30 rounders work poorly when using bipod. As I live in the desert and anticipate the possibility of fleeing my home, I keep the possibility in mind that I might (in fact probably will) have the need to use the bipod from a prone position.

Right now mine are in a couple Rubbermaid tubs. Except the loaded ones on my LBV.
Link Posted: 1/10/2006 10:48:34 AM EDT
While I can still get all my guns in the safe, I don't store any rifle mags in there. I have some on top, and some pistol mags inside in hanging bins (it's a small safe with spaces for Acro-style plastic bins). The others I have in a box near the safe. While I cannot see myself spending $1000 on magazines, I do need more; I only have five at the moment, and I'd like to have at least twice that.

Padded NOD cans for me!

You can drop these off the roof without bending a single feed lip.

mine are currently sitting in a cardboard box right here beside me and the computer, til I figure out something better...

During the ban, I tried to keep a sampling of hicaps in the safe so if the house was burgled or burned down, I wouldn't be up the creek.

But know, I have many more mags, and some more guns and little will fit in the safe anymore. Just a stash of loaded AR and G17 for SHTF purposes.

I still spread my eggs around against theft by having some in the garage.

If there is another ban I will start to spread them around to my parents. And maybe get another safe.

I keep a couple loaded mags in the safe, unloaded mags and ammo are kept in locked metal cabinets. Cabinet keys are kept in the safe.

I store empty mags in 20mm ammo cans. I don't see the need to have them taking up space in the safe.

I use something similar to THIS, since I don't have the room in my safe.
A small job site lock box seems to work well. Protected padlock(s), hard to move when loaded, can be bolted into place, etc...
I place a thin pad on the bottom to protect the mags. If you get a box big enough, you could put separate cans/boxes inside.

I keep all My mags loaded in the safe. Since the sunset of the AWB the extra space in My safe is
becoming tighter. I am already planning on buying a bigger safe and using My current safe just for
ammo,mags etc.
