Most of the cheap aftermarket 40 rounders do not work well and are nothing you would want to bet your life on. I have a couple of PMI 40 rounders that work 100% with MagPul followers, though I had to file on the mag catch hole slightly to make them fit right. I am told that Stirlings work well if you can find them (but they are around $100 each). Although my 40 rounders work well, I use them for IPSC/3-gun only, and only for stages where the extra rounds save me a mag change. I do not use them for stages where I am going to shoot prone because they are a tad long. I certainly would still not carry them for SHTF... if you find yourself in a situation where you really need the extra 10 rounds and can't reload, the S really has HTF big time. With the above said, you may want to trake a look at the new DPMS 45 round mags, whihc look like they are made from a pair of GI mags welded together. I suspect these will work OK, though they are a bit spendy, and even longer and more unwealdy. |
