I imagine this is a stupid question, but what is the safety pin on the bandoleer strap for? I'm guessing it was to hold a stripper clip guide.

Can also be used to adjust the length of the carry strap.

There is no specific use; it's there to give a GI an extra useful field tool that can be used for many, many things, including the uses listed above.  They are commonly also used to hold up BDU pants when the top button pops off, to attach various items to various other items (used on ALICE packs a lot), and even as emergency temporary "stitches" to partially close wounds in the field.  Like the MRE spoon, 100 MPH tape, and 550 parachute cord, the safety pin is one of those "can't live without it" items that has a million improvised uses in the field..
