| Since GA Precision is no longer in the picture, anyone have a source for Perma Slik G? I found one, but he wants $23 a can. |
The PSG is for refinishing mags. It will make your AR look like a brand new 30 round mag. Here is an informative thread by Stickman on using Norrells to refinish your AR. cwo.pre-ban.com/index.php?showtopic=19024

Not sure, but I am seriously thinking of just getting some substitute from Brownells. I would still like to know if there really is any difference between this Permaslik stuff and the KG Coat or the Brownells Moly. Besides the baking process anyway. Anyone know how well Permaslik holds up? -mbd |

I called GPSS everyday this week and 3 days last week--he definately is away from the phone. I had a thought the other day to call the manufacturer and speak w/ distribution or sales and ask if they have any suppliers in my area. I may just go ahead and try the stuff 2xtap has. |
| I went to the local Grainger industrial supply store and purchased a product called Moly Dry Film Lubricant, cost around $15.00 a can. I am anxious to try this product on some of the range mags I have bought lately from the EE. I'll have to wait till the weather gets better, right now everything is covered in ice. |

I went to Grainger's web site and the product they carry is made by Loctite,so I then went to Loctite's web site and found this pdf on their product.Looks like the same stuff just by reading. tds.loctite.com/tds5/docs/MOLYDFL-EN.pdf |

I also went and bought a product from my local Grainger. Mine did not have the Loctite brand, so I got the CRC brand for $6.xx/can. I have a review, but need someone to host about 5 pics(640x480). IM me. In the mean time: I got the CRC stuff this morning. This is my process for prepping these mags: 1. Disassemble 2. Soak mag bodies in hot water w/ cleaner--I used Joy cause that's all I had 3. I used a bottle scrubber brush to clean in/outsides of mags 4. I also put them on a pan in the oven w/ paper towels, but it was time for din-din, so I only got about 5-7mins of heat. 4a. It was actually a week before I could get to the mags again 5. To further prep the mags, I used an automotive product called Final Klean by Dupont to clean any oil/residues 6. I used gardener's wire to hang my mags like in the refinishing thread (this is thin, but has good strength) 7. It was about 45degrees outside so I used a heat gun to expedite the drying process 8. I applied about 2+ coatings to the outside and only a light spray to the inside(mostly at the feed-lips) 9. I found that I had to hold the can about 12-14" away to keep from running the lube. 10. Definately wear gloves--I got spray on both gloves--even on spraying index finger 11. Went over w/ heat gun to help bake it a little Notes: This product goes on very thin, and when dry has an OD green color. As I was applying initially I thought that I would not like it cause it was not gray, but I think the OD green is pretty cool. I had 19 mags I think and I covered all the base plates 2x and all the mags except one front and a crappy speckled side of another--can was running out. I don't think that I will be able to effectively give feedback as to the longevity--I don't shoot that often. |

I went to grainger today and picked up the Loctite brand, man was I tempted to buy the CRC stuff at $6.00+ a can but Im glad I didnt now that I know its green. That might be good news to some of the guys around here with green furniture.Anyway the pdf I posted on the Loctite brand said it was black but I tested it on a scrap piece of aluminum at work and the finish ends up dark grey like the Permaslik. It took quite a few passes to get the depth I was looking for in the finish.I sadly wont get to test it either as the weather forcast looks cold, wet and ugly for a while around my neck of the woods |

I got my can of PSG from Elliott's in Blacksburg, VA. They're the ones that organize the C&E gunshows in VA. When I got it at a show (Either Roanoke or Bealeton, IIRC), I picked it up at their table, the owner said he had some more at the shop at the time (this was about 2 years ago). If they still have it and they take it to the show, you can save on the shipping/hazmat. I don't remember what I spent, but I think it was something like $12-18 for the can. Elliott's Blacksburg, N. Aerosol cans are haz-mat and orm-d material and have shipping restrictions placed on them, UPS Ground or Fed EX Ground, being an example. With that being said, a can of Aluma-Hyde II from Brownells only costs $7.95 to ship. That's their standard shipping rate. Two cans of Loctite moly dry film lubricant shipped to some guy I know only cost $5 to ship UPS Ground. Where are these high shipping rates coming from? |
I IM'ed isaidme, but realized that it could benefit the board: I didn't actually bake my mags--I used the heat gun I have to 'go over them' a little after I was done. |

JHill Im glad you posted that you sent an IM because I just found out I have alot of IM's that I didnt know about.I assumed that when you get a IM on this site a pop up window shows up. |

I, I believe(I am a mag newb) that you actually should NOT try to strip the old finish. Something to do w/ anodizing. All that I did was use some paint thinner to remove some spray paint that the previous owner used to distinguish certain mags. I only did this to the outside of the mag. Next time I clean some up for refinishing I am going to get some Purple Power or Super Clean to clean out as much powder residue from the insides. Joy didn't clean it that well, but I am not that concerned about the inside at this point. |
