About four months I bought a RRA 9MM AR-15 for use as an entry weapon. I felt that my 5.56 AR had too much penetration for urban areas so I went with the 9MM. Only problem is I can't get magazines for this weapon. Can't find the anywhere. Colt won't even discuss it. I am considering selling the AR and getting a Beretta carbine and find some 20 round Beretta mags. I have never run into a problem like this before. I tried some of the converted magazines but so far I get about 20 failure to feed out of a 25 round magazine. |

I don't profess to know much about sub caliber conversions... But you should check out the Equipment Exchange. Here's an ad on the EE. (Will these work?) RRA 25 Rd 9mm Mags... HTH. Sly |

Glens: I hate to take this thread 'off topic', but I seriously think you might want to re-evaluate your enitre decision. You indicated you where worried about overpenetration with the 5.56, so you went to 9mm. I strongly suspect this is the wrong way to go... I'd stick with the 5.56mm. Don't take my word for it. Try it yourself. Beg, borrow or steal a 5.56, and load up some lightweight ammo. Try 45, 50 or 55 JHPs. Even better, try some of teh various polymer tipped varmit rounds. They set up your own little test: Build two 2' x2' 2x4 and drywall "walls",. Set them a few feet apart, one behind the other. Then try your 9mm with whatever load. Follow up with the 5.56mm. I think the results will shock you. The 9mm will penetrate MORE than the 5.56. Those light fast 5.56 bullets break up awfully fast, and the remaining little fragments aren't nearly as dangerous as a slower but far larger 115 or 124 grain 9mm. Try www.olyarms.com and check the tech files for the .223 penetration article. It's enlightening. I'd personally stick to a light, fast 5.56 round. In addition to being better for the intended purpose, mags are easy to find. Frozenny |
Lots of people are having good luck with the VM HY-TECH uzi magazine block. It replaces the normal 9mm mag blocks and uses unmodified UZI mags (easy to find and cheap). ![]() ETA: +1 on frozenny's comments. |
My thoughts as well. You Sir are very wise. eta - or you just read the ammo oracle, like I did. |
+2 Why would you go from a round that can fragment into hard targets (cutting fown on stay bullet risk) and eviscerate bad guys inside of 100 yards, to a puny round like that??? Never trust your life to a 9mm that doesn't have a selector switch And if you can get such goodies, see if you can grab something in .45, 40 S&W, or 10mm instead. |
ABSOLUTELY CORRECT. Nine mil, especially out of a carbean will outpenetrate 5.56 8 days a week!

Actually what I was considering doing tests on was a very light weight , fast 9MM bullet. On the order of 90 grains. I also have the 5.56 to test against. Laos, I found two twenty rounf Colt magazines at a local gun shop yesterday. $60 each but at this point any price seems ok. Seems that there is demand for these and someone would start making them. |
I see what you're saying, but I've heard even the 115 gr silver tips have fallen out of grace with the gurus due to not penetrating deep enough to hit vital organs. I think that most folks like the 55 gr bullet out of the 5.56 carbean because you'll get good terminal ballistics on your threat, but less penetration thru walls and such if you miss. |
