Yeah I know there are those that say  ..... "you can never have too many"

or

"They wont last forever so buy extras for later"

or

"buy em before its too late and they are banned and you cant get any more"

And Im not talking about  it being easier to have 20 or 30 loaded ready to fire when ya hit the range rather than load em as you shoot em

But seriously, none of us, or 99% of us arent in harms way in some sandbox in bfe and need to have stores of mags, loaded and waiting, for the hordes of Islam to attack our Lazy boy infested living rooms. Im talking about  a comfortable number of mags to have on hand

So how many is REALLY enough to have around to use for home defense of rampaging hordes of yotes, possums or the occsional invasion of  B27 style targets. Given that the normal "carry load" is 6+1, is 7 per rifle enough ? 14 per  in case of mag destruction ???

But then I dont see us hitting the back fourty to get the Hell out of Dodge with our b.o.b. and two seperate rifles and a sidearm, along with 100 lbs of other gear in a worst case secenerio.

Serious discussion, no zombies, no Red Dawn, no "Im a mag whore". Just honest discussion

Nobody can give you a reliable, straight answer. The point is, nobody can tell the future. The troops may return from the middle east and decide to dump all of their surplus mags on the market.........I doubt it!!

So, what you accumulate for the next few years is what you'll have!!! Probably!!

I usually try  to use the rule of thumb of 50 magazines per rifle. But if the prices drop when the AWB sunsets, then I may bump that number to 100. I am well on my way to 50 for my HK91!!!

I doubt it too, since it would be highly illegal of them to do so.  Klinton ended the surplussing of government-owned guns, gun parts, mags, ammo, uniforms, etc., in 1997.  Had the AW Ban not already been in place, this would have been much more "visible" to the community.  The wake-up call for this is going to come in September, when everyone expects to see piles of surplus post-94 mags, and there aren't any.

That's the way to bet, for sure.

Tuff question you have asked.  Lets see, I have 120+ USGI 30 rdrs and 50+ USGI 20 rdrs and I have more than 1 and less than 10 AR's.  I've always enjoyed and jumped on deals in the EE for mags.  So the answer to your question is, the more you have the better, I believe.

97' ban.

where can i find more info on it?

is there a way to get rid of it?

I believe every rifle or pistol should have a bare min. of 3.

Basically, Klinton signed the UN-sponsored International Small-Arms Proliferation Treaty, and part of this treaty requires the regulation of the sale of surplus military weapons and ammo.  Klinton's "interpretation" of how to enforce this (the President is the head of the Executive Branch, remember) is to ban surplussing these entirely.  In theory, Bush or any other president could issue a finding that surplussing these items does not violate the treaty, and they could once again be released for surplussing.  Don't hold your breath waiting for this to happen...

If you have 2 AR's, Buy six for one and a half dozen for the other.

I have 1 AR, and 9 30rd mags. I dont have enough. I think probably 20 per each rifle is enough. That being said, my AR that I carry in my car has 5 30rd mags loaded and ready to rumble

[#11]
I bought my first AR in 1994 just before the ban.  Since then I have had ZERO mags go bad.  I have way more mags than I need, but have put thousands of rounds through the  same six or so GI surplus mags that stay in my range box.  Now, I don't go running thru the woods and playing "Red Dawn" either!

Figure how many mags you really use and how many rounds per year you use them and figure how many mags go  bad each year.  Figure out your failure rate per # rounds per mags.  Plan accordingly.  I would say the absolute minimum would be 3 per whatever.  Two to use and one to  use after the other 2 crap out  and you are looking to buy more.  There are millions of USGI mags out there and unless outlawed, 'always' will be.  It just takes money. :)

BTW, IMHO, when the ban sunsets, you will see mags at the surplus shops in the 6-12 dollar range, but agree with Troy, the big surplus dealers that deal  in thousands at a time will be a thing of the past.

My logic is ten 20 rounders, ten 30 rounders, and one 10 rounder per rifle. I have more than this, but that amount would be more than adequate for Joe Nobody.

I'm also assuming another ban will come somewhere down the road, and that assumes the present one won't be renewed sooner. That being the case, I'd like to have 15-20 30 rounders per rifle, and a few 20 rounders per rifle. I'm not quite there yet, but after 9/14, and prices hopefully come down a little more, I'm going to finish my procurement.
6/21/2004 4:10:40 PM EDT
[#14]
For me, 20 30 rounders is just fine.

But right now, I only have about ten!

I had ten more,  but I ran out of money a while back and I sold half my stash to some other arfcommer.

He was very pleased with their condition, as I recall.  And why not?  They were all clean, drop free, green follower-equipped,  USGI contract, and had been relubed with the correct mil-spec dry moly lube.

So now I've got to replenish my supply, and probably refurb THEM, too!

I don't know how many I have.  I have 5 ar's in 223 so I might have 20-25 mags.  I really don't keep track of all of them.

75and I have more than 1 AR,I like 15 per rifle and in the way my personal gear is set up I can carry 20+2,,,mag cinch.30 of them the brit mags all flawless. The rest GI.

I have way too many 30's and not enough 20's

I kind have taken a liking to the 20's these days, plus they work better shooting from the sandbag for prairie dogs

Think of it as if you were purchasing a Bently automobile.  If your in that dealership and you start talking price- you can't afford one.  If you are wondering how many mags is enough- your simply not there yet.

1st rule of how many mags to have:

1.  Always have at least 1 more mag than your "2 way range" partner!

I am trying to stick to the 10 per gun rule.  Getting expensive though...

I only have three guns. A Kahr PM9 for CCW which I have 3 mags. A Glock 26 with 1 hi-cap and 2 standard mags. My AR I have a couple of NIW ones along with 6 range mags and about a dozen or so 30rd and a dozen 20rd mags in various finishes. All have been tested and all stay UNloaded, exept for the range mags. They stay loaded at all times. The range mags will just be used for the range and the rest are fo future use in case of the AWB being permanent. I have started to get some replacement mags for my 20rd mags in case they become banned as well. (You never know).
Thats probably about it. Im too poor to hoard mags.

This reminds me of another age old question....

BTW, in my world, one can never have enough. Should the S ever HTF, I will go down with a hernia 30 seconds into it.

i got my RRA 16" in may and have 30 30rders.  that is not enuff for stashing loaded, range etc.

Sooooooooooooo ...
100+ 30 rnders and 30/20s would be  what  ......
just right or too many

I might  just decide to sell a few to lighten my carry load

Well when the S does actually HTF and you're lying in a ditch somewhere trying to protect yourself from (insert favorite enemy here) who are trying to (insert favorite problem here), and bullets are flying, tanks are advancing, choppers are circling, do you reeally thing it's going to matter weather you had 30 mags or 130?

You're going to need more than ever legally own.

We are going to have to band together and steal gear from the military if we hope to survive.

Well I figure that if the SHTF here in N/Tx, the North Tx/DFW crew has more class 3 weapons than most third world countries and a call for back-up will be sufficant.

Bring on the invading hoards of zombie yotes

Seriously, Id rather carry a couple of extra ammo boxes full of ammo w/lula and a carry load of 6+1, than the same 4000 rounds in loaded mags

I'm sure plenty of USGI mags will find there way off base and into civilian hands.

If Uncle Sugar isn't surplusing anything...Then where is all the goods coming from? Some broke PFC looking to put new speakers in his slammed Hyundai??? Hmmmmm, could be. You know what? Good for them. The Generals are stealing alot more!
