Today i went to the Wilmington Ohio gun show and purchased 2 30rd usgi mags with green followers. When i got home i inserted the empty mag into my rifle and was unable to pull the charging handle back more then 3/4 of and inch before it hung up and jammed. I took the mags back to the show along with my rifle and the table owner himself tryed to pull the charging handle back and it jammed on him as well. He then tryed a Colt brand 30rd mag and it too jammed up in teh same spot. He then inserted a Orlite 30rd and it functioned flawless. Why wont my gun work with steel mags but works fine with plastic ??????? Next question!!! My rifle is a post ban , am i legaly able to use pre ban 30rd mags in it???? Thanks, Rob |
| That's really odd. I have nver heard of a problem like that. The only thing I can think of is the bolt carier may be binding on the mags somehow? Or the mag is sitting too high in the well? See if you can use someone else's bolt carrier in your upper or even a completely different upper and carrier combo altogether and see if it does the same thing. If it stil does it, send it in to DPMS and see if they can figure it out. |
| Yes it is really odd. What i found even more odd is when i loaded the steel mag it functions flawless when cycling the chargeing handle but once the last round was chambered and i tryed to pull the chargeing handle back, it once again jammed about 3/4 of an inch into the pull. It only did in on a empty mag. What worried me about it is that once the last round was fired and the action would have tryed to cycle , it would have gotten jammed up , who knows how bad!!!!! It may have had to do with the green followers, i dont know...I guess untill i can find another carrier to try, ill have to stick to orlite mags, they seem to work fine. |

J3, from your info i was able to determine that my problem is as you explained. I do have a A1 style upper and carrier and after looking at it with a flashlight i can see the scrapeing on the bolt catch. Is there a way to fix this or am i just SOOL ??? Do i need to modify the steel mags, replace the bolt catch, upgrade my carrier or stick to Orlites ????? Could this also be caused by the upgraded green followers. Im gona have to get a few diff types of mags and investigate this a little more. Maybe i can try a steel mag with a old style follower and see if it jams.... Thanks for the info, and any more would be awsome...... Rob |

I think its your bolt catch is riding up too high therefore binding the carrier from moving rearward. unload the rifle completly. Remove the rear take out pin. Then at the bolt catch, is there play on it? will it move left/right a little? a lot? none at all? Then insert a mag into the rifle after you have closed the upper. Push the top of the bolt catch towards the receiver so it is close to the receiver (push just a fraction of movement, this should make sure the bolt catch is as low as it should be). Now pull the charging handle back. it should come back easily. Pull the trigger to decock it. Now, pull the bolt release away from the recevier (to your left), this will cause the bolt catch to raise higher then normal. Pull back charging handle and it should bind. If it happens like this, sounds like a loose or improper bolt catch at the detent. So its prolly your rifle and not the mags. Maybe some mags cause it and some don't due to difference in the mags showing the flaw in the rifle parts. |

Replace the bolt catch and its parts when you get a chance. BUT it could just not be broken in and might wear into itself. I would not modify your mags or anything like that IMO. Till then, you just make sure the bolt catch is pressed against the receiver before you pull back the CH. |
