Is refinishing necessary for function?  Anti-corrosion?  Or is it mainly for looks and/or resale value?

PermaSilk is a dry lubricant.  Hence, I refinish for the following reasons:

1.  lubricates the outside of the mag enhancing insertion/removal

2.  reduces glare signature - shiny metal not good

3.  they look new - makes me feel warm & fuzzy

4.  it's so easy and cheap to do, why not?

You don't have to worry about corrosion.  Under the coating is anodized aluminum.  Anodization is an anti-corrosion coating, but if it's removed aluminum will just corrode slightly and self protect.  (anodization IS corrosion)

Purely cosmetic.  Not done in the military.
