I bought a Bushmaster a couple of weeks ago, and I can't get the first round to chamber without jamming.  Is it that I am loading the mag all the way?  I have read a couple of other post about not loading them to full capacity.  What's the purpose of having a ten round mag when you can't put ten rounds in the damn thing!  None of my other type of guns magazines have this problem.  I have a preban 30 rounder that is the same way.  WTF!?

On the ten round mags.... well, all bets are off.  Those are bastardized mags, not made to the oringinal spec of the gun.

On the 30 round mags... IF USGI....  yes, I have seen this.  Some of my AR's when they were new, did this on the first round.  I could pull the charging handle back all the way, and they would load fine, but if I hit the bolt release, they would not always chamber the first round.

Downloading by two seems to fix this, and also I only have had it happen on my carbines.  20" rifles all work fine.

Let it break in after 500 rounds or so... and see how it does.  It hardly ever happens to me now.

Well, a buddy of mine that served in the Gulf War (now has the syndrome from uranium poisoning, don't you love the feds?) said that they always downloaded 1 or 2 rds to keep the exact problem you are having from occuring.

Two things:

One, my Bushmaster 10 round mag had a failure every time it was loaded.  I never used it again and used USGI only.  Problem solved.

Two, dont ride the charging handle forward.  Let it fly like you are shooting a bow.  I have seen people ride the carrier forward on my AK and make it jam the same way.

both with my own personal ar's and when I am instructing military personnel I say to always pull and release charging handle to load rather than using bolt catch- the extra 1/4" or so of travel gives just enough increased force to chamber easier. Also this reinforces the same loading process if bolt is locked to the rear or not.

Load the mag with 10 rounds and let it sit for a couple of weeks.  The spring is really stiff in new BM 10 rounders, but it should break in with use.  Mine had FTF on the first round for a while, but after cycling it a few dozen times shooting with 9 rounds loaded it finally broke in and works fine now with 10 rounds.
