I’ve grown bored with my ARs and back in June I posted for thoughts about getting a Ruger American in .223 to help burn through the loads of 55gr .556 and .223 I have stacked up.

I put this gal together over the summer . . . .

. . . . . and I tell you what

#1 that brake sometimes makes my ears ring with noise cancelling ear buds (more so than my RPR in .308) .  Ready to try wi one of my cans but haven’t yet.
#2 as some predicted it is not grouping particularly well with 55gr (3” @ 100yds).

So far all I’ve run through it is some old 55gr Taiwanese Wolf Gold.  I have some others such as battle packs of PRVI, Korean PMC and some other’s I can’t recall.  Some mentioned theirs do better with the likes of heavier 62 or 75gr.  I should point out my buddy (a reloader) got one shortly after me and he has been grouping quite well on some experimental loads of 55gr, even hitting 400yd steel 4 out of 5 times.  So it may not be all about the bullet weight.  Nonetheless I’m wanting to pick up a few boxes of each just for comparisons’ sake.

Does anyone have some suggestions of off-the-shelf brands of heavier .556/223, in what weights, that have done well for them through this rifle.  Preciate any further insights folks can offer here.

The older 77gr CBC mk262 clone shoots right around 1" 10 shot groups and runs 2750 FPS out of mine.  I bet some other similar loads could mimic that.

Try a few different match grade 69-77gr bullets.  Shoot a couple 10 round groups for each one and compare results. Make decision based on performance and cost.

Here are a couple options that get suggested a lot.

AAC 77gr OTM NEWER 2700fps version
IMI Razorecore 77gr
Black Hills 77gr SMK
ADI 69hr SMK
Federal Gold match 69/77gr SMK

An aggregate ammo finder like Ammoseek can be useful when shopping/comparing.

My 1-8’s like Black Hills 77 smk but the price/performance of the razors core is what I buy. I’m going to give AAC 77otm another shot soon as it’s the lowest cost out of the ones I’ve tried.

Good luck!
