I'm planning to hunt this year with my AR15 specifically for deer and hog. I wanted to hear everyone's opinion on the best .223/5.56 ammo for deer. More or less has anyone felt certain brands have been superior such as hornadys white tail interlock, winchester powermax bonded, or federals vital shock trophy bonded tip round? Any others people have had good experience with?

I'd probably go 77 grain since it's the heaviest stuff you can get for 5.56mm. But really prefer using a 308 bolt action rifle for hunting deer.

Hands down agree about 308. I have a ruger 308, but I'm just enjoying my AR so much right now, I wanted to give it a shot at hunting deer. Especially now that they started making rounds that are deer penetrating

Federal Fushion MRS 62gr load, works well on hogs, deer.

The first and last deer I will shoot with .223 was with 64gr PPs. I used those because I couldn't find any 62gr TTSX.

Very underwhelming to say the least. My bow makes for a cleaner kill.

IVe been told to use soft points not open tips like SMKs.   Ive stocked up on Fusion MSRs as my go to SD round and seems every one agrees for hog or small deer they work great

I won't hunt deer with a 223/5.56. IF I were to be in a situation I had to, GD 64 or 75, Fusion 62 would be my choice. Hogs, these work well on too. Keep it under 100 yards if possible.

People will rant they have taken deer out to 300 yards with a short barrel. I can't argue that, I wasn't there, but will argue how ethical it is. Just because you can, doesn't mean you should. Hitting at a distance doesn't insure terminal performance being proper either.

Fusion MSR 62g, its Great ammo.  Or grab a Grendel upper, about the perfect round for deer.

I've used 64 grain Speer Gold Dot and Rem 55 grain PSP.   Neck and heart shots with both and both worked well.

I have killed my last 3 deer with the Gold Dot 64 gr., soft point.
2 Whitetail bucks, both at around 150 yards, one shot and dropped.

Last year I shot a 6x4, 255 Lb Mule deer in the front shoulder with the same load from the same weapon, and it broke both front shoulders and he made it about 30 feet.

It seems to be pretty effective.
However, I don't think I would shoot an Elk with it unless I could shoot it in the head at close range.

Hornady 55 grn soft point, federal fusion 62 gain, and Hornady gmx 70 grn have killed dozens of tx white tail and some pretty big hogs on my parents place in TX.

Hand loaded Nosler Partitions work well

I've killed a bunch of hogs with M193, more with MK262.  A little Central Texas deer isn't hard to kill.  If you don't kill it, shoot a different one.  We're overrun with the damn things.  People don't kill enough of 'em, they're just disease and parasite carrying vermin here.

There are lots of options these days that didn't exist 20 or even 10 years ago. You'll get lots of good options listed and I don't doubt they work fine. My precision hunting rifles get Black Hills loaded 77gr TMK's. My shorter range general purpose hunting rifles get 75gr Gold Dots (which shoots very precisely, just not as precisely or with as much velocity as the TMKs).

Serria 65gr bt sp if you hand load, have taken many deer with just the hornady 55gr sp factory and handload's. Winchester 64gr sp has also worked good, out of these the 65 gr serria was the best performer.
