Looks to be good ammunition, Has anyone used any of this?

I ordered 100 rounds to try out.  RUAG in general has always had a reputation for being very accurate.  This is what the company literature says:

5.56 × 45 HC (SS 109)
4.0 g / 62 gr
–– Cost effective
–– The HC (SS109 / M855) is specifically
designed to NATO-standards
–– Fully compliant with climate zone
A1 requirements
––Muzzle energy 1 785 J
–– Penetration at 570 m:
–– 3.5 mm steel plate, Rockwell B55-70
–– Accuracy at 300 m
sH ; sV = 85 mm

I went ahead and got some to try. Fire danger here in NV, so it may be a bit before I can test it. Has anyone tried this ammunition out yet?
Also, I read that this particular M855 is lead free?

This is the same factory that makes the 77 gr. otm for Prime, and geco 55 gr. So like stated above I would think it will be on the accurate side for m855.  That being said if it is a precision round that would be a feat, as the 62 gr. SS109 projectile is not known as being highly accurate. But with that being said if anyone was going to be able to do it, it would be RUAG.  Only reason I didn't buy 1-2k was I have 2k ggg m855 I got a EE deal on that I still have to use up first.  I actually had 1k in the cart before they fixed the shipping glitch.  I may still order some thou.

I don't think there are much reports out there just yet as they were uncommon, and only now do I see them for sale again.
Currently I only see AIM Surplus and one more retailer carrying them.
Although I have no idea about their M855 ammo, I am sure they are quality, as RUAG has very high standards.
I am a huge fan of the GECO 5.56m 55gr ammo, which is made by RUAG, and it is a consistent 1.33-1.4MOA ammo in my SR15 Mod1 w/ 16" CHF LW barrel.

Although they are importing it as M855, its not.  It needs to be the ss109 projectile to correctly call it M855 and these are a creation of their own.  Nice one too in my eyes.

Its a long solid copper with a thin narrow mild steel core that has a hollow cavity behind it.

No biggy except that the M855 Penetrator, with the ss109 projectile, has been placed on the exempt list by the BATFE for allowing the sale and purchase of armor piercing ammo.  (M2AP too!)  For reasons mentioned above, the 5.56 LF HC SX should not be allowed to be sold as M855 because its a different model of Armor Penetrator.

With that said, I've got a couple hundred!

This is the 5.56 HC (which uses the SS109 projectile), not the 5.56 LF HC SX

(this one)

(not this one)

There was a little LF HC SX available here a couple of years ago but the one place that had it seems to have changed owners and they no longer stock RUAG stuff

Is Aim incorrect to state that it has a Dual steel core? I was thinking that it was like the lead free Carl Gustav stuff I've tested in the past. Now I'm curious as to what's inside :D

The plastic stripper clips don't work with the GI stripper clip guide, the Thermold works perfectly:

We await your tests which are always awesome and informative. This really looks like a winner as a high quality 5.56 round.

I am out of stuff to pawn for my SG ammo and AIM 5.56 deal purchases.

Got Mine, and I have to say it really is nice looking ammo. Now to get a chance to try it out.
Thanks for your work Buffman, and thanks AIM!

I stopped in and picked up a few boxes from Aim yesterday. Only had time for 2-5shot groups at 100m with my MCX/TA33 on top. First was 2.06" and second 1.38".

Conclusive? No but that's 2 of the better groups I have shot with M855/SS109.
Link Posted: 7/8/2017 6:51:05 PM EDT
[#21]
Even with five round groups that's impressive for M855! I cannot do 10 round groups in the desert with the wind blowing.
After 5, my eyes are blurred and I have to rest. You did good by my book! Close to an inch is better than I have ever done with M855.

Good Velocity #s and accuracy from my testing.

Excellent! Thanks for the quick review.

This stuff appears to be much better than that FN SS109 we were seeing earlier this year.

Nice work.  Thanks.

On a whim I bought a can and now I'm really glad I did.  Sold out already?  Dang!  Haven't shot it yet.  My new club doesn't allow it.  Will have to take it to the farm next month.

??????   I just read his archived review of various M855 loadings and it was awesome stuff.  I was really hoping to see his review on the RUAG.

So here's an interesting tidbit. I typically measure the tips of the M855 occasionally for make up and hardness. 99.29% FE, but the hardness is 60RHC. Usually most of the other M855 I've tested, maxes out 47-55 RHC..

How do you "notice" something like that?
Link Posted: 7/13/2017 12:36:12 AM EDT
[#36]
I cut a couple in half. One LC, One Ruag. Grab the halves in two pair of needle nose and commence to bend them back and forth.
The Ruag snapped much faster than the LC. The Ruag core cannot be touched by a file, the LC core files easily. That's about it for my "science".

Would me interesting to test on some mild steel. See, if this will penetrate deeper than LC.

The NATO standard for penetration is based on the max distance that the round will penetrate 1/8" mild steel plate, not how deep it will penetrate

Went to the Washoe range today. The RUAG shot better for me than the Lake City green tip. I averaged two inches at 100 yards with my SCAR L. This is just about as good
as I have ever done with this particular rifle, and about as good as I can shoot. I am pleased. I took the time to fire one round into 4 one gallon jugs of water lined up. The results
were interesting. The first jug split down one side, and the exit hole was much larger than the entrance. The second and third jugs were blown up impressively. The fourth jug was untouched. I found a small chunk of lead in the second jug. It looked as if the bullet may have fragged, as the exit holes in the 2nd jug appeared to be composed of a multitude of pieces. The 2nd jug was destroyed the most, also. This ammunition would make for an interesting gel test.

I've been saying for years, to anyone that will listen, that foreign M855/SS109 doesn't have the accuracy issues that US made variants do. People insist on blaming the dual core design in general, when it's just not true.  It's just Federal/Lake City...

[#44]
When the fire danger is down I will shoot some Ruag through some 3/8 inch mild steel at 300 yards, and another plate I will shoot with LC M855.
Anybody want to do a gel test? How much Ruag would you need?

for those interested, RUAG lists the BC of this round as 0.310.  iirc, the BC of US M855 is 0.273

The bigger the number the better and I believe that's a bit higher than a 69g SMK.

anyone else get to shoot groups yet with the RUAG?

I got great accuracy from a 11.5 HBAR colt barrel. Got 1.5 inch 10 shot group using a red dot and a sled

I also shot it from a 16" wilson combat rifle 1x6 Khales scope, It got about 8 shots in an inch and had two fliers out to about 1.4inch

I think a really accurate rifle could get these sub moa 5 shot no problem. Easily the best m855 around currently but I would say their HC lead free stuff was even better (about 1.5$ a round too when it was available).

the Swiss never fail to amaze me with their accuracy. I put SwissP as the best ammo available period.
