I wasn't sure if I should post this here or the precision rifles ammo section.  That seemed geared to precision stuff and I saw a couple of other caliber threads here. So, I posted a local ad on armslist for 308 ammo.  This guy says he has lake city linked ammo.  I am unfamiliar with linked 7.62 ammo.  Im a pretty new shooter.  I just got scar 17 and sr-25 and was looking for cheap plinking ammo.  He has 1000 rounds for $550.  I will include the picture he sent me and a headstamp to follow.  I read on a thread here that linked ammo is hotter than non linked because it was made for machine guns.  Not sure of the validity of that statement.  Just want to make sure im not buying some cheap shit thats going to give me issues.  I will only be running it through the scar 17 and sr-25.  Thanks Guys

Looks like Malaysian ammo that was around back in the 90's. I still have a .50 cal can of un belted .308 in my stash. Decent ammo and goes bang.

The difference between 308 and 7.62x51 is similar to 223 vs 556 but flipped;  308 is hotter than its military counterpart.  With that said, I've never heard of 762 being loaded hotter for MGs.  There may be a tracer every 4 rounds, but everything I've ever heard is that 7.62x51 is 7.62x51.  LC is a pretty standard manufacturer, they make military stuff as well as Federal, American Eagle, and others.  It's usually associated with pretty good quality; I wouldn't expect you to have issues unless the ammo is really old, corroded, and nasty.  for $.55 per round, that's not a bad price at least where I am.

Incorrect.  308 and 7.62MM (there is no x51 designation) pressures are measured by different methods, and there is no method to compare the two.

Although there are slight differences with chamber dimensions, SAAMI lists no difference between .308 Winchester and 7.62MM (Nato) ammuntion.

Yes those are Malaysian cans , Odds are it is Malaysian . It is decent and reliable in my experience . The links should be M-60 style links .  As to value I am not sure . You can get Hirt surplus from SG for about the same or a hair less and it is good ammo.

No offense to anyone.... but what is in the cans ? Yes, those are Malaysian ammo cans.

but...

I asked for headstamp pics before I was going to leave to pick them up and I never got a reply, and when I called no one picked up.  The whole thing with this guy was weird.  First he said it was all lake city.  Then after hearing from you guys I asked if it was Malaysian.  He then says yeah it might be.  I told I wouldnt pay the same price and then he says 600 is malaysian and the rest is lake city.  I just told him I'm good.

This dude was either trying to rip me off or he didn't know what he had.
