[ARCHIVED THREAD] - XM855A1

Does anyone know where you can buy the newest XM855A1 ammo? I've been watching some YouTube videos on how well they perform but can't seem to find where you can buy them.

It's still being tweaked for full prime-time in the military, so it's doubtful anything out there is "newest". Further, no, you can't buy it.

I don't disagree that those are all great rounds, it would be nice to have a couple boxes of the updated 855 rounds though.  I'm wondering if you can't buy them as a civilian since I can't seem to find them on any sites.

You ain't gettin' it.

Solid copper and steel, that is "AP" in the eyes of the ATF.

(Even though it really isn't AP in performance)

EDIT: their definition of "AP"

18 U.S.C., § 921(a)(17)(B)
•A projectile or projectile core which may be used in a handgun and which is constructed entirely (excluding the presence of traces of other substances) from one or a combination of tungsten alloys, steel, iron, brass, bronze, beryllium copper, or depleted uranium; or

•A full jacketed projectile larger than .22 caliber designed and intended for use in a handgun and whose jacket has a weight of more than 25 percent of the total weight of the projectile.

The term “armor piercing ammunition” does not include shotgun shot required by Federal or State environmental or game regulations for hunting purposes, a frangible projectile designed for target shooting, a projectile which the Attorney General finds is primarily intended to be used for sporting purposes, or any other projectile or projectile core which the Attorney General finds is intended to be used for industrial purposes, including a charge used in an oil and gas well perforating device.

M855A1 does not contain berrilyum copper, therefore it is not AP per the ATF definition.

IMO the reason it's not for sale to civilians right now is because there is simply no surplus, and no stock to rotate out.  They are using all they are making.

We will find out in the coming months/years when they start to catch up and all the green tip is rotated out if they will sell it to civilians.  I think they will.

Liberty won the patent, they own the design.  They could start manufacturing and selling it any time they want I believe.  Their COO told me they hadn't made their minds up on whether or not they would do that.

I hope they do.

i would expect the DOD to strong arm them into NOT selling to the civi side, LEO's maybe.

similar to what the FDA did with the IR laser industry.

I got a brief on 855A1 from PEO Ammo earlier this year.

M855A1 will not be released for public sale.  PERIOD.  Anything for sale on the civ market is contraband, it is stolen.

Cool part of the brief is that there is gonna be M80A1, same bullet design in 7.62x51.

I saw the M80A1, that is going to be insane.

M855A1 is the army designation for that round, but Liberty owns the patent.  They could be strong armed into not selling it I'm sure, but maybe they will sell it under a different name.
