Can you get busted for shining having a light mounted? I have always heard it is a no no. Slick set up btw. I suppose I could...but then what if you carry a light for tracking? Or drive to your hunting site in a vehicle with headlights? I really think situation would trump all, but I didn't shine, and I was on private property. |

It's adorable! And you killed it. ![]() But it had zombie eyes. It needed killin'. OP, fwiw, I also often use an AR carbine for our small Arkansas deer, and have taken both smaller and larger ones than that. It's (obviously from your own pic) a very effective caliber if loaded intelligently. And ignore the jesters - the cuter an animal is, the tastier it is...

Would a head shot been better at that range? I never took a deer, so just asking. Congrats! I am never for a headshot. They move their head around alot, you don't want to risk breaking their jaw and they get away to die a horrible death. #2 there is CWD (like mad cow) that lives in the brain and spinal cord. Even if you don't know of any CWD in your area, there is always a first. I don't even remove the head when I butcher, I just have the hide over it. Looking at the photos it was good shot placement. Would have got both lungs. I aim for about 1/3 up from the bottom of the chest and right behind the shoulder meat, also envision the meat location on the other side. I sometimes do a quartering shot where it goes in or out the front and the other hole right behind one front leg. You can hit the heart and miss all the shoulder meat that way. Crazy thing is how far a deer can run with a destroyed heart. It would be super gross to shoot a deer straight on and let the bullet blow open the stomach. So always consider the exit point |
