As stated in a couple of my previous posts, I am new to the AR community and am looking to build an AR 15, likely chambered in either 223 or 223 wylde.
I am still educating myself on everything in general but am now most curious about the 223 wylde ammo and what it takes to hand load it. Can someone explain to me how this is done? Do you start with a typical 223 casing and re-size or is it more complicated than that? Thanks. |

Wylde is not a separate variation of the .223 Cartridge. Its the name of a chamber designed to accept either 5.56 NATO or .223 Remington cartridges.

Bottom line you can safely fire both 5.56x45 ammo and .223 Remington ammo in your 223 Wylde chambered barrel. And as for reloading... your .223 Remington dies are the ones you want. |

OP, for now, don't worry about the differences in the chamber dimensions. These Wylde reamers have been run by many of us for many seasons. You will have better performance if you are interested in accuracy work and giving up little or nothing in terms of reliability. There really isn't any issue with specialized sizing. Most of the manufacturers make good dies that will not give your AR any trouble. The basic sizing isn't a challenge compared to a bolt gun. The AR just gets a little more shoulder bump to make sure the bolt closes reliably. Regardless of the reamer version or pressure levels between 223 or 556, the magazine length is a standard. You will need to pay attention to bullets getting into the weight range near or above about 75 grains to make sure the seating depth works for the magazine length. Some of the VLD designs and longer bullets up in those weight ranges require either single round feeding or special loading procedures. For now, seating those bullets at magazine length is much more important than small base dies or getting too exotic with loading processes. If your BBL twist is meant for the heavier ranges, say something like an 8 or 7 twist with 20" and the Wylde chamber, you are likely to be loading 77 SMK or similar at magazine length. An example of the differences between loading for AR or a bolt gun, is shown in the separate sections in the Sierra Bullets Loading Manual. The section for AR is similar in places and different in others. It would be good for you to study those recipes and the differences for the same components in those two different sections. There are links to pdf versions for both Bolt and AR about half way down the article below. http://www.accurateshooter.com/cartridge-guides/223rem/ |
