[ARCHIVED THREAD] - How much is enough? (Page 1 of 2)
Posted: 3/16/2015 8:51:40 PM EDT
| I purchased my second home last January and a portion of my down payment was sourced from the sale of firearms and a plethora of ammunition. With that said, I sold my core of 9mm. Fast forwarding to last Friday, I started to take full advantage of Perfecta 9mm offerings at my local Walmart for a mere $6.94 per 50 round box. Since then I have amassed 5,000 rounds. With that established, when do I stop and is that considered too much of the same branded ammunition? Or should I continue riding the wave and stacking it deep? Space is not an issue on my end but as with anything in life I tend not to have all my eggs in one basket. |

It is so sobering when you go through an ammo stash and find the price on old ammo boxes, wow, wish I knew then, huh. |

I have no idea if this is from a website that falls into your definition, it was posted in the now 119 page thread (in GD I believe) about the M855 ban. link ETA: whoops, too slow |

I say buy as much as you can afford, but I'll admit I'm an ammo addict. You know it won't be any cheaper in the future. I look at my stash as an investment. If times get tough I can sell everything and at worse break even. Ammunition is not a free market. It is subject to bans, restrictions and even the value of the US Dollar vs precious and semi precious metals. It can get 'cheaper' in the future, and you should only buy on the dips, but ... at the stroke of a pen it could be illegal to own, use or even sell. TRG |

TRG So we should only buy the amount we plan on shooting the next range/hunting trip? I don't put all my eggs in one basket. I try to keep, at a minimum, a reasonable 'lifetime' supply for each gun I own. 300-500 of 30-30, 2-3k 9mm, etc. Not enough to get rich, not enough to 'choose this hill to die upon' if suddenly our 'nation of laws' made me a criminal for possession. | Been "struggling" with this one too...lmao...my wife would think I have way too much ammo. I don't shoot a lot as I spend most of my time looking for new guns, but I do shoot some and want to have it for if needed...I started out with 1000 rounds per gun as my target (not caliber, gun)...but see if the wife knew that she would understand what I was up too right? For instance I had 1000 rounds of 7.62x51 for my M1A but then with the price of ZQi before I knew it I had over 2000 so I uh "HAD" to get another gun right? Hence a new AR10A...uhoh I just noticed I have 4000 rounds of .223/5.56mm and 4 rifles/carbines but I have another 1000 rounds incoming so I uh "HAVE" to go get another gun now right? muahhaaaahaaa (don't tell the wife of my scheme). |

| I buy ammo anytime its cheap, right now if i see mil spec 5.56 under $0.35 a round after tax/shipping i buy it. I also reload for around $0.20-0.25 a round and stack the ammo 1k rounds per 50 cal can. Dont run up your credit cards buying ammo but ammo is one of those commodities that will just steadily increase over time. it has highs and lows but if you buy the lows, just like in the stock market you will turn your ammo stash into an investment of sorts. |

Damn I wish I could find it that cheap! Lowest I have is the aluminum for 9.95/50 Agreed with the first poster. Depends on how much you shoot. But with ammo it will never get cheaper check out Freedom: http://www.freedommunitions.com/9mm-115-gr-RN-New-p/fm9r115n-c1000.htm and http://www.freedommunitions.com/In-Stock-Now-s/53970.htm I have shots 1000's of their 9mm - both new and remanned (JHP and RND) - its GTG |

Having the $ & space and no other deterrent, there's never too much.
That price seems impossible assuming it's not junk, I'm gonna have to check my walmart. I recommend test firing a lot of any new to you brand and/or style ammo through every gun to assure it works well for you. Record lot numbers somewhere easy to access in case of a recall and keep receipts for it somewhere it won't get lost, in the ammo can perhaps or with the lot number records. Inspect as many as reasonably possible and fire a few from each lot to make sure they're good before it's too late to do anything about it. |

I don't have the money to buy gold so, I buy ammo At the moment, guns (ARs in particular) are a better investment than ammo. I also think AR magazines (among others) are also better purchases than AR ammo. I recall the salad days of 3-5 dollar AR mags. Those days are here again, along with the (adjusted for inflation ) 400.00 ARs. TRG |

I had 30x mags for two rifles (and one in process). Y'all made me go get 13 USGI for $8ea. Now do I have enough?
Stopped buying rifle parts so as not to go broke. Now I'm gonna do the same thing on mags and ammo. ETA: And the current build is going to be a precision rig, which means more expensive ammo! It never ends... |

I know I have some unused NIB USGI that have a nice 10 year patina of dust on them ... and I still think I should be a few more while I can. TRG |

| I remember buying WWB 9mm for $14.xx per 100 rounds when I got my first handgun... bout seven years ago. I went in Wal-Mart last night and it was $26.97 for the same box. Over the years I have shot my way through most of my stash, including nearly all of my 5.56 ammo... trying to build it back up now. |

If it's "good" fiochi and not the underpowered shit, at $7/box? I'd buy whatever I could find. Literally. Prolly start thinking about stopping around 20k, and would be tempted to keep buying it for flipping later. It's not going to go bad, and $7/box? That's stupid cheap, likely a mistake. |

Damnit...y'all talked me in to buying 100 more USGI mags. TRG In my opinion, ammo and mags are by far the best thing to stock up on. In the 4 years that I've been shooting, ammo prices have steadily gone up and the same with magazines. Guns on the other hand have stayed exactly the same (handguns) and have only gotten more affordable for ARs. I'm finishing off my current build and dumping all of my gun money into mags and ammo. Besides, if money ever gets tight, I can just sell off some ammo/mags and the worst I can do is break even. I'm so tempted to buy a case of mags myself. I might wait til the father's day sales and snag more than one case. |

Ammo, because of the M855 panic is too high. 7/62x39 is 350 per thousand and moving up...fast...there is nothing in the supply chain, it could be 500 per thousand by this time next year. Pistol calibers are still relatively low, but, not bargain-basement prices. 10 cent per round bulk packs of 9mm are probably a thing of the past, but 20-25 cent per round..delivered 9mm is still there. If you can find AR mags under 10, NIW, get 'em. Sandy Hook drove mag prices to 30.00+ overnight. TRG |

Also, at the time I lived near a major Army base with surplus stores everywhere. I quickly sold my pmags for an average of $45 each and used the money to buy 100 surplus USGI mags and a metric ton of the ammo I could find. I felt bad about taking advantage of people, but I did list them on an auction site

I'm confused...can some explain the importance of having that many magazines. It's not like ammo where you shoot it and it's done. Magazines last a while. I can understand if your buying them as an investment to flip later. But why the fuck do you need 100+ magazines, am I missing something?
Are we strictly talking high cap magazines for fear of them being banned? Guess with me being in California. I'm not stocking up on 10 rounders. |

This topic has come up a lot over the years. usually the responses fall along these lines.... 1. This is America, I have the right to buy as many magazines as I want. 2. Eventually they will be banned, I want enough for my kids and grandkids. 3. Buy cheap and stack deep. 4. How many mags and what a man does with his mags are his business. 5. My favorite: a) Buy mags b) ???? c) Profit |

Are we strictly talking high cap magazines for fear of them being banned? Guess with me being in California. I'm not stocking up on 10 rounders. For me, the 1994-2004 AWB taught me a couple of lessons: 1. Don't assume that something will 'always' be available for a reasonable price. 2. Have 'more than you need' so that you can sell in to a panic and still have your core (lifetime) needs met. 3. Prices today are the 'good ol' days' ... you'll miss them. FWIW, I was buying South African surplus for 89-109 per 1k 'in the good old days'. 1998-2002 22lr is now in the same 10 to 15 cents per round range. Back ' in the day' the AR15 was a 'weird guy gun' that nobody shot unless they were 'that guy'. Now, the market is much, much, much larger. The buyers are more educated and the supply of ammo and mags has expanded ... but... not at the rate needed to sustain supply through these panics. Panics don't really bother me. I tend to have enough stuff purchased in advance to weather the panic and buy the following dips. TRG |

I made a deal with KurtsKustom back in 2001 or so. The deal included 3 Ciener mags, 30rd capacity and a 22 Ciener kit. I think the mags were valued @ 75.00 ea at the time.
The deal fell through and it was only a partial trade. He sent 1 mag, not 3. I spent a long time, during the ban, using a single magazine for my 22LR conversion. I was married, broke, and never had the scratch to just buy 2-3 more mags for a 'toy'. I now, post ban, have stocked up on several more of those mags ... just because I remember how bad it sucked to have 'only one mag' for a gun that I liked to shoot. To its credit, that single mag has probably seen 20k rounds through it. Seriously. Hi-cap Glock mags during the ban? 60-90 ea? You can buy them now, shipped for 12 or less. TRG |
