Hey guys so today I was shooting through my chrono with a brand new batch of Federal XM193 marked 2014. Out of my new 14.5 BCM midi I was getting around 3100 fps. Doesnt that seem a little hot for the barrel length? The lowest was right aroun 3020 fps. This stuff seems a little hot but there were no pressure signs such as flattened primers or bulging any where. What do you guys think/

Man I hope someone can help me. I wish I woulda shot it through my colt as well to see how much higher velocities were.

If I recall correctly, it should average in the 3050-3085 fps area from a 14.5" barrel..

Oh ok. It just seemed pretty dang hot. I guess thats not too far off.

Ok good. I just dont want to be shooting this stuff and it being hard on the weapon, and yes I know BCM has a reputation for lasting a long time using mil-spec pressure ammo. Im good to go!

If you're that concerned about it you could always shoot some lighter .223 loads like PMC bronze

It's fine and your rifle will be fine.

M193 should run about 3200 from a 20" barrel

3200 from a 20" barrel? I was reviewing the numbers again last night  (again this was shot from a 14.5)  and the highest i got was 3165. So does that mean out of a 20 it would be shooting 3450? Yikes!

Should actually be 3,250 fps from a 20" barrel + / - 25 fps.  The original intent for M193 was for it to run 3,300 fps out of a 20" barrel, but they weren't able to get it mass produced at that velocity consistently without occasional rounds exhibiting over pressure signs so they kicked it back 50 fps.

M193 should be around 3,150 fps from a 16" barrel and 3,050 fps from a 14.5".  I personally prefer M193 that is loaded on the hotter side due to increased fragmentation consistency and range.  Federal XM193, IMI M193, and PMC XM193 are all loaded on the hotter side and they usually clock in around 3,275 + fps from 20" barrels.

So what does it mean that I was getting a few at 3130 out of my 14.5?

If my lot pf 193 is too hot what are some pressure signs i could look for

Blown primers primarily... and overly deep primer strikes.

Means you have some great stuff!  The faster the better, esp for M193.  You are getting 16" performance out of a 14.5" gun.  Assuming it groups decently, I would stack up lots of the same lot number.  Do you have other guns to test the velocity out of, or other lots / years of XM193 to test the velocity of to use as a control?

Send the ammo to me for proper disposal

After careful consideration, I've decided I want to do my part for the community and also help the OP dispose of this dangerous ammunition. I will go the extra mile and test each round.
