Do the Marines still use this, or have they gone to M855A1? Im a civilian but per the military forums i have read Mk318 is being slowly phased out and being replaced with m855a1. Mk318 was developed for the special forces and adopted by the USMC as a temporary replacement for the old m855 while they waits in the new m855a1. Mk318 is hard ammo to find but if you can its def high quality ammo and its barrier blind performance is undeniable. Also considering that m855a1 fits the ATFs definition of armor piercing ammo I would say mk318 is probably the one of be best barrier blind rounds you can actually buy. |

Yeh, that's actually my concern. Best I can tell, MK 318 actually in stock at online vendors (as opposed to online auctions) disappeared when the oh-no-Obama-reelected panic set in, and has never reappeared. I pretty much wrote off ever seeing M855A1 on the civy market because of the armor piercing thing, so I'm worried MK 318 never will come back. I use an ACOG with the USMC reticle calibrated for M855 green tip, so I want a good barrier-blind load that matches green tip trajectory. MK 318 fit the bill, but I don't have nearly enough to actually shoot any as opposed to hoard what little I have left. It seems the other recommended loads are either "LE only" unobtanium or not M855 trajectory. If the Marines were still buying it, then I'd expect Federal/LC to keep making it and it would eventually reappear at the usual suspects. |

Well, it's turned up available in the last couple of weeks. US Armorment has had it since at least the 11th, when they emailed me that it was back in stock - $429.95/500, limit 2/week.
Palmetto State Armory briefly had it a week or two ago, but quickly sold out. |

Is this stuff worth almost $1.00 per shot? Will it do something three times better than my existing M855? Well, almost all premium ammo will cost your $1+ a round. Yes it is better but not "three times better", IE you wont get 3x the penetration, or range, or accuracy, etc... but there are always people out there (including myself) who are willing to pay more for and advantage, even if its a small one. Sometimes those little increments of performance can be very expensive but Quality > Quantity Just an example outside of firearms... A family sedan costs about $20k, top speed 120 mph A corvette costs about $75k, top speed 200mph A ferarri costs $250k, top speed 220 mph A bugatti costs $2.5 million, top speed 250 mph As you can see the cost increases exponentially for only small increases in performance. |

It's definitely not plinking ammo.
I remember pre-Sandy Hook buying a bunch at $14.99/box (20) and people were saying how over-priced it was at that time. I shot some and confirmed it worked well in my rifles and packed the rest away. According to my spreadsheet, I only have 600rnds.

I know you're just trying to make a point... but your example is over simplified, as you're asserting that the only differential between these autos is top speed. |

I'm sorry but that is an absolute terrible analogy. LMAO There is much more to a performance car (and family sedan ) than top speed.
