I have a few hundred rounds of Israeli M855 in sealed boxes. A guy asked me about it, so I opened a box.  The bullets are not green tips.  Has this been altered at the factory?

Some IMI manufactured M855 have painted tips and some don't.

So, if it is in sealed factory boxes, I am safe in believing it to be 62 grain bullets as produced?

If it came in sealed boxes, it should be just fine.  If you have anydoubt, post pictures here.

The SS109 are produced with and without the greent tip. Take a magnet to it to make sure it's steel core and you'll be good. Tons of countries make it without the painted tip.

IIRC, the US is the only country that paints the M855 round with a green tip, to differentiate the M193 and the M855.

US troops used a 1/12 twist rate to stabilize the 55gr M193 (not a NATO round), M855 require a faster twist rate due to the actual length being longer due to the steel penetrator, they marked the M855 so US troops can easily identify the round.

Other NATO countries never used M193, so there was no need to mark the rounds.

That's my understanding.

IMI only places the NATO cross on the SS109 NATO ammo.
That brass has it.
Unless they mistakenly loaded the 55 gr bullets in that brass.
Confirm by using a magnet on the bullet.

All I had available was a magnetic screwdriver. It shows no attraction to the ammo.  I have emailed IMI and asked them about it. Guy wanted to buy some from me, but he is of the opinion this has had the SS109 replaced before importing.  Never heard of such in my life, but I don't know everything for sure.

That's definitely IMI M855. I've got a little over 1,200 round of the stuff and it's deadly accurate for ball ammo.

First off, IMI is darn good 5.56 , don't waste it. Plink with some other cheap stuff.

IMI has , Over the years, sold M855 with and without the green painted on tip.

Personally , I would prefer the unpainted M855 since in theory it would be "more" accurate ( and I use that term and thought very loosely )... since any applied paint is not throwing off the balance of the bullet, regardless how little.

It sure looks like real IMI M855 to me.

Google shows both painted and un painted...

Put one of them on a scale and report back the results. I will dig a few out of the stash and get a weight from them.

ETA, I get a ten round average of 185gr.

I have the same lot and no green tips.  I also have a bunch from a more recent lot and these have the green tip this time!
