Is there any good reason to avoid .223 in a 5.56 chambered AR? I found a decent deal on AE 100 round packs of .223 but I have always been a 5.56 snob (no idea why, I have always just bought it over .223).

I no longer have a rifle anyway but the urge to stock up does not go away!

No reason not to keep a little inventory of it if you're finding it at a good deal.

All but one of my AR's is 5.56 chambered and I have only ever shot about 100 rds of 5.56. (Im cheep)

223 out of a 556 is perfectly fine, just not the other way around.

223 is GTG in a 5.56 chamber. I have lots of XM193. It is fine for most shooting, but for accuracy there seems to be more good 223 loads. Lately i have been shooting mostly 223 in 3 gun and other matches. Federal .223 walmart bulk, AE223, PMC all seem to be consistantly accurate enough for 3 gun inside 50 yards. Hornady steel match 223 and Black Hills 223 for further out.

For SD/HD i would stick with 5.56 loads.

I understand it works fine ect... Was just wondering if there was any reason to avoid it in favor of 5.56 (can get both for a decent price atm).

AE 100 Rounds .223 $39.99
Federal 20 Round Brown Box xm193 5.56 $7.99
PMC 20 Round Xtac M193 5.56 $7.99

Given equal pricing, I would opt for the 5.56.

If you mean American Eagle (AE) it is nearly as fast as M193 in 16 inch barrels.  Good brass.

Well ae223 is loaded to a shorter COAL then 5.56 loadings, as are some other .223 loadings loaded shorter. The longer jump to the bore (leade) might have it less accurate then a load that starts longer.

AE is ok, but at that price I would have to go with the XM.
I don’t think it hunts anything to keep some AE around to make sure a weapon is reliable with the weaker ammo.

I get much better accuracy with AE223 than any M193
Thats generally true with any .223 vs 5.56 ammo in my experience

This is my experience as well. I have gone solely to AE223 (black box) 55fr FMJ for 3 gun matches out to 300 yards. I have 400 rounds of AE223 now, but i am afraid to shoot it up. It is very hard to find ATM. I like hornady steel match as well, but AE223 is cheaper.

With the prices of ammo I've been seeing around here, where can I find some of the prices shown above?

Do they have better or worse prices on ammo at the gun shows?

Well, I answered one of my questions, the one about gun show prices.

Today I went to a big show in San Francisco at the Cow Palace.  Ammo lines were insanely long and the prices were higher than they are at the shops around me.

At least I did manage to pick up a few goodies for my build. Nothing big or great.

I'd still like to find out where you are getting those deals on ammo .......
